We have a 2000 SR-5 3.4 with 180K. Started smoking on startup (first time last summer after an oil change and 3 mi short hop) and started going through oil also. Never used more than half a quart between oil changes prior to that. Did discover plugged pvc - replaced - also found cream colored sludge in intake (it also filled the intake resonator -that box located right before the throttle plate housing). Had motor oil in air cleaner box also. Obviously the crankcase vent system was messed up. Bottom line is after cleaning everything out and watching accumulation in hoses from pvc and from driver's side valve cover, the sludge continues to build up in the hoses. I have run it several hundred miles - running great, no oil consumption, only thing different is it idles at 1100 rpm. Dealer blamed the sludge on short hop drives (wife goes either 3 miles or 12 miles one way to work) but my daughter's 1999 runner (same setup engine wise) has none of this sludge and she goes only 2 miles and back to work all the time. Something else has to be messed up. I cleaned the mass air flow sensor, replaced the O2 sensor and that cleared the engine codes. Appreciate the help. We live in Upper Michigan so it gets weather from -30 to 100 degrees.
