Quad Retro (yes another)

So I've got some rx350 projectors inbound and a spare set of OEM housings.

Came across a wiring conundrum however. Since the low beams and high beams are separate circuits I'm guessing I will just have to find the hot wire for activating the high beams and split it for the outer and likewise for the inner so everything comes on at once. I know it will be a tight fit on these but I'm fairly certain there is enough headspace in there for either minis or the d2s 5.0 to hang out with the rx350.

I will be running 35w systems for both. I think if I bumped to 50 I'd start melting stuff at some point.

Glad to be underway on this project and just a few days before black friday too.

only draw back with 50w ballast, the bulbs life is shorter, and you get 20% increase in brightness, must use oem bulbs like osram or philips , they do well with boosted power, also your projector bowls might suffer a little bit. but it takes a long time, unless you use your lights for hours.

Generally for about an hour at a time. Still though the 35w will be fine.

I love my D2S 4.0 housings and Philips bulbs. I have stock high beams still. But been thinking about doing a retro on this as well. I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread.

You should see fine with a quad 35 watt setup.

For the highbeams you can split the output from the OEM connector, no additional relays needed since the solenoids don't have much of a current draw.

These shrouds are probably the slimmest you can fit on a mini-D2S type projector, and at the moment Lightwerkz is the only US source for them SL-1M - Projector Shrouds - Components, it'll be a tight fit installing a D2S in the highbeam reflectors so these shrouds will probably not need any trimming
. Their Black Friday sale will probably start tomorrow (Mon the 25th)

Good to hear those fit in the housing! I'm trying out the rx350 because of the great low beam but the d2s has a great high beam output. Can't wait to see what the 5.0 will do. I'm considering shelling out for the StiR lens for the rx350 setup as well.

I was definitely interested in those shrouds because I knew it was going to be a tight fit for dual 3.0" projectors.

try to fit the shroud again after final alignment of the lights, i would trim the shrouds on the projectors if modifications are needed.

Haven't gotten to that part yet but the high beam area is pretty tight. Not sure if the HB can be paired with the shroud mentioned above but it might help.

Ok so not a ton of exciting progress but I have the lenses off and the lights fully disassembled.


Low beams with the fixed shield removed. They'll be extra parts at the end and they have zero damage so if you're interested please message me.

d2s 5.0 test fit. I'll have to do a little dremel work with the fixed shields to make them mount but fitment is definitely not an issue. I'm also considering shoehorning the rx350 projectors in as well. There is plenty of room for each but mounting the rx350 might prove challenging to get centered.

The RX-350 lights were modified to accept STiR lenses. Looks like it will be a great upgrade over the stock glass.

Fully re-assembled RX-350 projector with the new glass.

Next stop for the housing will be sandpaper followed by primer and some interesting paint colors (hopefully)

I'm keeping this in for now since I have to do all of my fitment off of this piece. I'm going to have to drill out the center on the high beam to get the projector to fit but honestly it should not be a big deal at all. Holesaw should take care of it very quickly. The interesting part will be seating the shroud so it meets up with the bowl. I imagine at some point it will be sandpaper fitting.

Just an example of how clear the STI-R lens is. It was made to fit though. Tomorrow I'm going to try and get the drilling and fitting done. If I get lucky I'll move on to priming all of the pieces. I've taken the orange reflectors out and there will be halos replacing the turn signals. I think the halos will really set everything off and make something unique. Not sure if I will add in the LED strips but I certainly have enough room to make it all work.

Right now I'll be cutting out the fixed shield to make a mount for the rx350s and for the high beam I'm setting the d2s 5.0 in there. I just set everything in for giggles and to see how much room I really have to play with. This is a huge headlight. Plenty of space for all kinds of stuff.

Lots of progress today. Well some at least. I have a little more trimming to do for the d2s in the high beam area and now I have to make the plate for the rx350. Best tool for the job is honestly a dremel and a hacksaw.

Lots of work still to be done and I still have the other light to modify but so far so good. Not only in the trimming part but the rigidity remains in the mounting plate to where I do not think jiggling will be an issue.

The pictures are all messed up for order but I tried to take pictures at every step of progress.

My humble work area that I've carved out of a garage. It works for such an intricate project though.

The goodie table. At least now everything is organized somewhat.

First test fit in the high beam area. This is actually the easier of the two to mount and fit. I would have been done with the mounting if I had not gone with the rx350 projectors for the outer.

Fully seated.

Tested with the cover on. Lots of room. With the shroud on it will blend in pretty well I think. Time will tell though. I can sink it more but honestly I like how stiff this mount is currently. If I have to cut into the bowl more I will erase strength from the reflector housing.

Another shot mounted. It's dead on for aiming purposes or at least the beginning of the aiming process.

I had to cut the throat a little bit. The rear of the projector matches the rear of the housing which is great for sealing. I might have to shave some more off to fit the ring. I don't want any twisting on this at all.

Looking at the gap for the rx350 projector

It's tough to tell but I had to cut quite a bit from the outside to get this to fit with the OEM shield control.

I managed to save the mount for the stock fixed shield. It's going to be my new mount for the rx350 projector after I get done with it. Gotta wind up the dremel with the metal cutter.

Dropped the main piece on after I finished (kinda) with the rx350 just to make sure I'm square. So far it looks great. After I modify the shield it will be perfect.

Just a comparison of the unmodified housing and the modified housing. All in all it didn't take much to get things where I want them. The awesome thing is I did not have to mess with the aiming controls so everything should remain as normal.

I knew this would be a big project but honestly I am pretty happy with the progress so far and it is pretty straight forward as well. It might be easier to fit smaller projectors......but go big or go home for this build. I've got a couple of cool details up my sleeve. More to come.

i think you should cut the high beam bowls and sink the projector in, i think it can be a naked projector or use a shroud. now its interesting seeing the rx350 in the lows, i wouldnt use the brackets, i would try to mount the projector in modified headlight bracket. might need to cut a slit on the side of the high beam. after all my final adjustment, my projector doesnt sit too 100% middle of factory shroud.

I do have a shroud and I think it will blend in very well. I might have to slit the bowl just to tuck it a little further. That's a good idea though thanks.

The shroud is really skinny. I went with the new design that I can't remember the name of lol. Supposedly it's the skinniest on the market.

The rx350s won't be fixed for lows. They will have a high beam as well but I am going to cut a hole in the fixed shroud and attach the projector as the factory did. It's a simple solution and an easy secure mount. I think the projector sticks out the back just a little but it shouldn't cause any clearance issues.

I am changing the drl setup and the turn signals. The orange reflector is removed so it will be clear only. I won't have any time today to work but perhaps tomorrow. Lots more to get done!
