Question about 1999 "Tall" Coil Springs.

I was at a junkyard and they had a 1999 4Runner Limited. The rear coils were already out of the vehicle so I picked them up. They have the yellow/red markings as described in the 3rd Gen Lift Guide:

I was thinking of putting these in my 1998 4Runner SR5 for an extra 1" lift, but after looking at the pictures of how the 1999s sit, I am not too sure if I would even notice a difference. Here's a picture of how mine sits so far:

I read somewhere that certain models of 1998 and 2000 4Runners might actually have these "tall" coils installed from the factory. Anyone know how to check? When I looked under my truck I couldn't really see any markings.

I'd be interested in hearing what you guys know about these famed 1999 "tall" coils.

I have the 99 Tall Coils. These coils specifically come from the 1999 Highlander Edition 4runners. I could be wrong, but i don't believe the Limiteds had the same coils. For me, i got 2" of lift with the 99s in place of my stock 2002 coils. I bought them brand new from Toyota so I knew they'd be fresh and not already in the sagging process. So far I'm very happy with the result.

If indeed I am wrong and the Limiteds had the same coils as the Highlanders in 1999, it couldn't hurt much to throw them on and see how it looks.

I don't think they ever came on any '98. If anything, they might have came on some 2000's if the person buying it new knew about them and wanted the option. Which at that point, the dealership probably installed them. The '99 tall coil came on most if not all limiteds that were 4x4. The best way to tell the difference is a side by side comparison. Otherwise, look for the correct corresponding paint markings. If they're not there, then they're not the taller coils. Different year models of the 3rd gen 4Runner achieved different height changes after the swap. '01 and '02 4Runner's are considered the low riders of the generation. They both achieve around 2" of lift from the coil swap.

You seem to be on top of this... I have read many threads on the topic, but since you seem to know about '99 coils... I have a '97 4wd limited that measures 35 1/2 ground to flare, front AND rear... no rake. It "looks" a little taller than most of the others on the road (it's stock atm) - I'm likely comparing mostly with fat lips, so I know they're lower already...
could I expect any noticeable lift going to the '99 talls?

You may or may not.. 4Runner rear coils have a tendency to sag. Especially on the older year models. You may be comparing to those that have already sagged as well as to '01s or '02s who originally sit lower than any of the other years, even the 4x4 models. I guess you just gotta wade your options and see if it's really worth the hassle for just 1" of lift. It's not necessarily hard to do, but it's up to you. You will end up with a slight take most likely.

Hi Mccamp82 - not sure if you'll be able to answer my question since I'm replying to a thread that way old - but...

About the 99 coil springs you put on your 02... Did you have to make any other adjustments to the shocks or other suspension parts to make this spring swap work?

I have an 02 and am thinking of doing the same thing. Shocks are only a year old, (KYB Mondo Max) so would like to keep them.

Any further info you have is appreciated

I have 99 tall front coils that I snagged from my donor rig. It was not a highlander edition and I confirmed they are in fact the tall springs by the color code on the springs and the roughly 1" I gained.

The previous owner was a member on here, maybe he still is (can't remember his name now). I don't believe he was the original owner so it is possible that they were swapped at some point.

Honestly, I would just get OME 906's for the rear. I like mine a lot and they are pretty cheap ($160).

I agree, and I ran factory '99 talls for 15 years. They never actually sagged unloaded, but when you put any weight at all in the back the sag was ridiculous, even when relatively new. I wish I'd gone to the 906s sooner.

They are excellent for towing, that is for sure. In fact, it rides better when I'm pulling my boat!

Just my two cents. I bought moog springs and KYB gas adjust struts and shocks, I love the ride and it is just about the same size as 99 talls. Here is pictures with 32s. All in all it was 325 for parts including new sway bar bushings. I do all my own work so labor was free. Anybody with determination can do it. It is a lot cheaper than Toyota OEM parts. I've out about 7k miles on them by the way.
