Question about 4Runner KEYS

When I bought my 4Runner, it only came with 1 key and the key is a typical key like from Wal Mart or something I guess.

I am looking for a TOYOTA key. It doesn't need to have the chip in it, but I just want it to have the black Toyota end....and I want it to be able to start the car. I don't want the master key necessarily.

Any ideas? The ones on eBay say they will only unlock the doors.

Thanks! Any idea how much those run?

Can't remember. Want to say they were $10-$20 bucks. Reason why most owners just go buy the "wal-mart" key. :D

BTW, direct # for the parts dept is: 856-6550. Tell her Bill said "hello".

I'm actually going by there today matter of fact. Got about $400 worth of parts sitting on the "will call" bin for me.

I will probably call them on Monday...I work in Vestavia so I will be a little closer to them then. I wonder if they will cut the key too.

I saw your link to your 4Runner...WOW!! Very nice...wish I had the know how to do all of that.

Any time you are getting rid of anything let me know....I have no idea what is out there yet..just got my 4Runner a few weeks back...

Since I've got to stop by there later this afternoon, I'll ask her what one costs.

Heck, if you're in Vestavia, just drive down to Hoover Toyota. They'll get you going. Closer than going to Serra too...especially just for a key.

And yes, they'll cut it for you too. Just have to show proof of ownership.

Thanks for the comps too. This is my 5th 4Runner and they only get better with age :bigok:.

Aftermarket Keys

If you have time (typically takes a couple weeks because of shipping) and want to save a couple of bucks, I order electronic stuff from these guys all the time. I just noticed the other day that they sell a wide variety of Toyota keys.

Piperoo, meant to tell you, my contact at Serra Toyota said just a basic black key without the toyota logo on it is $6.95. However, the same key WITH the toyota logo on it is roughly $12.00. Just thought you might want to know for comparison purposes.

Thanks man!...I will probably head over there today and get a few. I just want to make sure I get the correct key.

Correct Key

So on Deal Extreme
http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.714~search.toyota keys

...It seems that either this key
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16376

OR this key

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16364

would be the best option. Anyone used either one of those? I just need it to function as turning car on/off, opening doors, etc....

The photo of keyway of the first one (16376) matches up to my '98 4Runner although I've never purchased the blank from Deal Extreme. Not much of a risk though at $3.21 with free shipping.

IIRC, you have to show proof of ownership w/ a VIN # to match in order for them to cut the key. May want to call ahead and ask what you need to bring with you just in case.

Will do thanks! I have my registration, insurance and all that, but I will call ahead.

Thanks again!

So I thought you had to have a chip in the key to be able to start the vehicle. We bought one w/o the chip at a hardware store for our Honda (by mistake), had it cut, and it wouldn't do anything.

For my 4Runner Limited, I bought a chipped key off eBay that had the Toyo logo for $13 shipped, and had it programmed at the dealer for $46.

Do I not need a chip in the key?

I have a generic key that starts my 4Runner....like a Wal Mart type key probably.

Did the key you had programmed at the dealer start your car?

Yes, it certainly did, but now I'm wondering if I really needed a chipped key... I guess I'll get one cut and try it!

Do you have Limited or SR5? What year?

Mine is an SR5. Yeah, I am confused about the keys too...seems like if my generic key would work then any key would work....I have no idea.
