Hey Guys-
I have always been intrigued by the possibility of having a DVD player in the car... and today found out that a friend (who just got a 2004 4runner and doesn't want to take out the factory system) is selling his DVD system from his 93 4runner.
He's selling a 7" AccellVision screen.....flips out of the dash, 2 a/v inputs & TV tuner.....and separate dvd player (you would mount it under a seat or something) - it's about a foot by a foot about 3 inches deep. He claims its a little "larger than the systems out right now" because it's a year old. He says he paid $1499 for all of this stuff, and is also trying to sell his Alpine Head Unit (CDA 7995) with the deal.
He says he will give me the head unit, the cables to hook this bad boy up, the monitor, the control box, and the DVD player for $350.
I am very VERY tempted to jump on this deal because I was just about to blow some cash at crutchfield on a new head unit... however:
I am not very impressed with the Alpine CDA 7995.... number one it doesn't have an internal amp so I'd have to get an external amp and I don' tknow if I want to get that deep into it and deal with an external amp.... number two I was hoping for a little more high tech of a head unit.
But ... a DVD system plus a decent head unit (MP3 playing is all I want) plus a monitor (which has capabilities of watching TV too, when the signal comes in) .... for $350? It's almost too good to be true - and it seems like if I pass it up - I will regret it. But at the same time I could use the $350 to get me a really sweet new head unit and forget about the DVD crap.
What are your thoughts?
Other problem would be hooking all this stuff up - do places do it for you if you didn't just buy something from them, and would it cost an arm and a leg to have it installed? Or are there instructions out there that would allow me to do it - I'm a techie I just haven't ever dealt with the car audio/video field... would love to learn though.
What do you think? Take the deal and run? or forget about a system that's a year old and the dvd player goes under the seat and spend my money wisely on a new head unit that has a sweet display and an auxilary jack for my ipod?
