Question about finding a 3rd gen 5 speed.

So I was hoping that you guys could give me an idea as to how rare and hard to find a 1999 or 2000 sport/ highlander edition with the 5 speed is.

I am not that familiar with the 3rd gens, but I am hoping to find a sport 5speed and would like to know what to expect during my search. Do these guys fetch an especially high premium, or do they pretty much follow KBB values?

My ideal find would be with under 70k miles.

If you feel the need feel free to flame, however, I am just looking for input from those that know more than myself.

5 speeds don't command a higher price but the trick is finding one and with under 70k miles makes it even harder since all 5 speeds are at least 8 years old now.
 
They must be too good, I've been looking all over the Rockies and can't find a good deal. Guess it says a lot. I did find a 2000 today for 11000 with 75K. It was a manual with the factory supercharger, leather, and moonroof. Also had the sport hood, but guy said it wasn't a sport or a limited. He said it came from the factory that way, but I am wondering.
 
It probably was a Sport/Highlander version but most owners are cluless about their own trucks in a lot of cases and Limiteds didn't come with 5 speeds so it's definetly not a Limited.
 
Anybody know why the 5 speed isn't even an option anymore? I feel like I have more control with it, especially in snow and slick mud. Any idea if the 2000 sport/highlander came with locking diff.? There was also a button to the left of the steering column that said something about the clutch, I should have paid more attention, but figured I'd ask when I take it in to get checked out.

I'm guessing either

1. Purpose: They've taken a new, more family oriented approach... who wants to haul the kids and go to the grocery store in a manual?

2. Cost: It could be that not many people were buying the manual... granted there still are people who like them... probably just cost too much to make versus how many were actually sold.

Probably similar reasons that they no longer produce a 4 cyl...

I agree that it should be an option maybe on the 4WD models and such as it would be more off-roader oriented...
 
All years of 4Runner up to '00 had an optional rear locker
and the reason of deleting the manual tranny option was mostly economics and buyer demand which wasn't there for the 4Runner and nearly 50% of 4Runner buyers/drivers are women and they simply prefer the auto and cost of just having one major drivetrain layout keeps costs down.

At least now they added a rear locker to the '09 Trail Edition which is a big deal for those who will actually take their 4th gen off road.
 
I've been looking for a 99 or 2000 5spd up here in Canada for a few months now. I saw one last week at a dealership finally (due to the way things are, I can only get at dealership as i have to trade in my old car to get and I don't want to mess with the logistics of being able to sell my car right when a 5spd 4Runner becomes available). It was beautiful, and only had 71,000 kms on it! But the asking price was $16900CDN and he would only go down to $15000CDN which is too much for me. :( I still dream about that one at night. I've basically come to the conclusion that I'll just drive my car till it dies and probably will never get a chance to get a 4Runner unless they re-introduce the manual tranny in the 4Runner again. I'm one of those who refuse to buy an automatic no matter how much I like the car.

That button is probably the clutch interlock defeat. When the ignition is already on, push that button, and you can start the car without depressing the clutch. Supposedly for getting going in tricky situations. It does NOT mean there is a locker. I use it for starting and warming the engine (and the inside) without having to get in the truck. Nine years and I have never forgotten to put it in neutral. Knock on wood.....
 
That's a great feature, thanks for the reply. Now I just hope it has locker, I'll find out on Thurs. morning when I take it to a mechanic, I really hope this thing checks out! I don't want to search anymore, just want to drive. I will get some pictures up if I buy it.
 
Good luck with it. I wish the 4Runners up here in Canada were priced as competitively as the ones down in the US. I just can't justify to my wife paying $14-$15K for an 8+ year old vehicle which is the average of how much the 5spd ones in my area go for, that's if I find them.

I think I found one myself, its not the sport but it is a 2000 and 5 speed with 60 k miles it doesnt have a locker which stinks but the guy is asking $9,000 so I think I might check it out.
 
:awais: I bought it!!! So excited I could barely sleep last night. I got the guy down to 9500, for the 2000 manual with 75K. I love it, and it snowed last night, so I get to throw er into 4 today and play around a bit in the slop. Good luck with yours, that sounds like a great deal to me as long as you have it checked out and it is clean. Let us know. I'll try to get some pictures today and get them in the 3rd gen pic. thread tonight.

Here she is, I hope this works. I'm better with cars than computers, and that's not saying much. First thing I want to do is get rid of the running boards, and find some good winter tires. Any good deals out there? It feels so good to be a t4r owner, doesn't it?
Ok can't figure out how to make the picture small enough.
