Question about insurance

Hi Guys,
I was just researching the true cost to own a 4 Runner and wondered if it cost more to insure a 4R LTD as compared to say a Honda Accord everything else remaining the same (no driving violations at all- good driving history).
What do you guys think?

I was shocked to discover my insurance actually went down going from a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT (turbo) to a 2011 SR5. It was only $40 a year, but as this was the most expensive vehicle I had ever purchased, I expected replacement cost factors alone would create a sharp uptick. Evidently, the class of vehicle matters more than I thought...

In 2008 when I was looking for a new car, I checked my insurance company and checked the cost of insuring a new SR5 4Runner and a new base 4 cyl RAV4. It turned out the RAV4 was about $40 more every 6 months. I was a little surprised by that.

Still, I think, insuring a new Honda Accord should be cheaper than the Limited 4Runner. Sedan's like the Accord or Camry have a good insurance rating, low to the ground and not considered a high performance car. Of course, the best way to really find out, is to check with your car insurance company. My company was glad to check the different prices and they know my driving record, so you know the quotes are pretty accurate.

Note: I changed the title of your thread from "Qquestion" to "Question".

My insurance for a 5th gen actually went down a couple bucks a month compared to my 2008 honda civic coupe with 70k miles on it. All of the coverages stayed the same. I thought that was insane!

My insurance will go down when I get my new 4Runner. I'm driving an 8 yr old Ford Exploder 2wd, and my rates go down by $6/6mos when I get a new 4wd 4Runner Ltd. Insurance agent says that the new vehicle technology makes the vehicle safer, and personal injury is the biggest part of the insurance equation.

You'll have to call your insurance agent. My 4Runner insurance is about $400/year cheaper than my GTI was. Safety rating, how often other owners wreck, how much coverage you carry, how easy it is to repair, availability of parts, etc, etc all can change your rates.

Same here, for some reason insurance for $40,000 2010 4Runner became $20 a month cheaper than for $32,000 2008 Ford Escape Limited.

It would be a bit more expensive over an Accord. Now if you were talking more about a Civic, then it would be cheaper as a lot of kids have them and get into accidents. Civics are also stolen often.

Our rate went up $10 a month going from our '10 Rav4 Limited to the '11 4WD SR5 4Runner.

Somehow insurance was cheaper for my 4Runner TE than for my 09' Matrix.

Understandable. There are most likely more incidents in your area with the Matrix then there are with the 4Runner.

My 05 Corvette was 1/3rd the cost to insure compared with my WRX STi.

$58.xx/month for full coverage through State Farm with $500 deductibles.

1 speeding ticket, no accidents
2 married drivers ~30 yrs old
4 total auto policies, 1 homeowners policy and a personal articles policy

There are really so many other variables though. I live in the Midwest and the car is garaged. Your quotes would be much more if you lived in let's say NYC and parked on the street. The 4Runner replaced a '03 Honda Civic and the rates went DOWN slightly in comparison.

thank you

Thanks a lot for all the input guys. I will call my insurance agent today and ask. Hopefully it will follow the trend stated on here and my rates will go down further.
Thanks again

I have State Farm Ins. 9 years driving experience unmarried male 25 years old, clean record. My premium is $546 every 6 months. $0 Comprehensive, $250 Collision.

LOL - I would hope so. The GTI could be considered a mini sports car - lol. I drove one for a few weeks after an accident. His insurance company sent me to enterprise to pick up a rental and the guy gave me a choice of a GTI or Altima. I chose the GTI because I had never driven a VW and honestly that little ride is a beast - lol. It has a freakin turbo on it and handles great. So I think that is the main reason why your premiums are drastically reduced with the 4runner (non-turbo - lol).

Well, 4Runner owners don't see it as a badge of honor to repeatedly replace oil pans because they've dumped the car so low. Grrr. I loved the car, but that community was about as idiotic as they come.

Cost to repair was out of control on that car, too. I hit a deer. HID headlight housings, not the ballast, sockets, or bulbs, were $350... each. The radiator fan ate the wire harness. The intercooler, AC condenser, and radiator all had to be replaced. Looking from the outside of the car, it appeared that only the hood was slightly bent! $4k in replacement parts for a relatively low speed deer collision. I hit a deer in a similar situation with my Impreza and it was around $800.

Considering that the 4Runner MSRP was about $10k more than the GTI and people say that they roll over easily, you'd have thought the rates would be similar. Oh well, I'm happy to pay the lower rates and have a vehicle that is actually reliable.
