I know a lot of the Hilux Surf JDM/World market (i.e., non-North America) 4runner/Hilux Surf models have an exterior, swing-away spare tire (like some of the 2nd gen 4runners did in the US market.)
My question is, was this just to make the tire more accessible, or is there something mounted under the body where the spare tire is carried on a NA-spec 4runner?
Reason I ask is because when I was in the Middle East, we had an 05 Prado that was very similar to the Lexus GX470, except that the tire was mounted on the rear door, and the other big difference was that the Prado had a huge - like 45 gallons! - fuel capacity with a main tank and an auxiliary tank. I presume the aux tank was mounted under the body, where the spare tire would be on the GX470. So my question is, is there a spare fuel tank on the rear-tire-carrier Surf models? And if so, is it something that can be fitted to a 4runner?
Seems to me that mounting an aux fuel tank to the stock spare tire location would be a good idea if it could be done without spending thousands of $$. I consider the 18.5 gallon fuel tank to be one of the weak points of the 3rd gen (noticeably corrected with the 4th gen which can carry almost 25 gallons.) My 1990 Montero had a 24.5 gallon tank so I've been measuring every SUV or truck I've had since that time against that standard.
