Question about painting sliders

Just wondering if you guys are painting your sliders before you weld them on or after? I hear that some welders don't like to weld over paint. Thanks in advance!

I don't have sliders but as someone who has welded before, tape off the area that needs to be welded on (give a inch or two for the bead) and paint the rest. Then after the welder is done go under and paint the unpainted portions. You may have to repaint areas close to the weld because some of the paint may be ruined by the heat.

I just taped off my entire truck and painted them installed...was a pain in the d!ck

I mocked it all up and welded the legs to the sliders at the correct angle, then I painted all but the last 2"s or so of the legs. Then I welded the legs to the frame and painted those last 2". Whatever works for you is best, I just didn't have anything around to mask off my truck with.

X3. I painted my sliders leaving about 2" bare on the leg and then finished up once welded on. Now I just take a sanding block once in a while to smooth the rough burrs off (from rock rash) and then touch up on the truck.

Thanks for the responses. I guess my dilemma of doing the paint now is that I'm not sure where the legs are going to be attached to the sliders.

X4. Paint everything but leave the last couple of inches without paint.

I have been using VHT Chassis and Rollbar paint (it only comes in a gloss or satin black). Holds up well, dries fast. The gloss dries too fast and is hard to get a smooth gloss but the satin goes on well.
