I agree that de-icer is bad news all around, but we have to figure out something because people will drive in adverse winter conditions regardless, and 4wd on ice is still not going to save you.

Studded snow tires and chains with ice brakers are both very effective on ice (if they're legal where you're at). We also use cinder rocks instead of ice melt/salt where I live.
