Question: About to pic up a 99 4wd

Hey Folks,

I cant sleep as tomorrow (today) is the day that I pick up a 99 SR5 4wd. its lifted with camburgs and on 33's with a lockrite locker in the rear. Has been wheeled and has cosmetic damage on the driver side and rear bumper.
It has 129k on a 3.4 auto and is in great shape.

Test drove it on Saturday and the only thing I noticed is that when I shift it into gear, it is sort of loud going into D or R. Just dont know if I should really worry about it, but I have a tundra and I guess I'm comparing it to how the tundra shifts. Never drove a t4r before so I dont know if its normal.

Best description would be when you are putting it into D it sort of makes an engaging noise that I would think is a little more louder than usual and you can feel it engage into gear.

Should I worry about anything? or should I just sweep it under the rug as its normal. I might be exagerating but that is the only thing I can think of that was a lititle peculiar when I test drove it. Other than that, $4500 I think is a steal for what it is.

You mean just a loud thunk when putting it in gear? Probably just driveline noise. Could be it just needs to be greased or could be it's getting sloppy and worn out. Did you feel any vibrations when you test drove it?

4500 for the mileage is good, i bought my 99 in october with 185k on it for 5000, however the body is perfect and it was in california all its life. runs fine, closing in on 196k now

Yeah, I know right! The seller is really cool too! It does have its fair share of rock rash but thats it.

Kball-there were no vibs when I drove it at all. It was really smooth. It felt right. And yeah, it was like a thunk come to think of it.

What do you guys think it could be? Do you guys have a checklist I can run with to do some maintenance? What should I grease first? Being it is when I put it in gear, would I grease the yokes or DS?

Yeah that's the same thing I have on my 99. I also get the thump when I release the brakes at a light and the drive shaft slides back into itself, I know at that point it's time to get out my grease gun. I say go for it,

For greasing, do a search on it, and read the tutorial and reference sticky. You might as well grease everything while you are at it (no reason to get under there with a gun and not do everything). It does require 2 types of grease though, regular and moly. Searching should net you the guide on what goes where. IIRC the Moly grease goes on the double cardan joint, and standard grease goes everywhere else.

I assume you checked the tranny dipstick for any sign of pink milkshake, right? That's the only weakness to these things I can think of.

If it doesn't have one already you might want to add an auxiliary tranny cooler and bypass the radiator cooler altogether. Just eliminates a potential source of failure. Cost is minimal ($~150 installed) compared to the cost of replacing/rebuilding the auto tranny (probably $3k minimum.)

The rock rash and the camburg lift probably explains the driveline noise : Check the U-joints.

Lockrite - so I assume that means no factory E-locker? Is the Lockrite an auto-locker?

Yup, checked for milkshake and it is clear of it. Doesnt have the trans cooler so that is on the way in the mail. No factory locker, lockrite auto-locker is correct and I will definately check the ujoints.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease check your U-Joint!!! My '99 Ltd would make a pretty loud obvious "clank" when dropping it into D, and that was the exact problem.

(Sorry the pic is so big, wanted you to see the bent end on the joint -- yikes!)

Oh man. I hear CA is nice but I think it might be a bit too liberal for me, not that i care much about politics anymore.. haha. My buddy just moved to L.A. for Verizon Wireless he likes it. He has a lexus is250 though so poo on him. I actually got the kit from the guy i bought my truck from. he sells them as a side business I'll dig around and see if I can find his info if you're interested, prob give you a decent price on em. its just a plug and play kit, it bothers me that its not in a projector ibut i dont have the time or patience to retrofit. if someone sold them id buy em ha.

I would like to see if they are any better than DDM's. I have some 5000k on my tundra and I love the out put. very bright! I just dont like the bulbs on my runner right now and I can only imagine them on the trail after dusk.... I would be wheeling blind! I will post up more pics in a few weeks as we are going to Lake Tahoe for a camping trip and I will be breaking her in, even though she has 129k on it already... hahaa! Thanks man!

Cool! Do you happen to have a picture of the connection as well? Do they kill the high beam mode? My 5000k from DDM doesnt let me have Highbeams. I think I got the one that is one mode Low only. I think they might have high/low now.

This kit is high and lowbeam. Theres a little motor inside that switches it to a high beam. Lots of glare haha.

I'm going to do some cleaning Ill try and find his card he gave me
