question about transmission service

I have a 1994 4runner with 120k miles that I just recently bought, and I want to service the manual transmission. I am not sure if the truck has ever been serviced before. I have heard that if the system has never been serviced before, that it is best to leave the system alone other than keeping the fluid level where it should be. Should I have the system flushed or should I leave the tranny like it is?

I say go for it

My feeling is that you will still accumulate metal shavings and sludge in a manual tranny overtime which can cause it to wear out faster.

Lots of people never change the oil in their manuals and don't seem to have any problems.

It seems that manual trannies are actually designed to last whereas automatics, in some cases, are only made to outlast the 100,000km manufacturers warranty like the dodge caravan.

The only reason I bought an automatic 4runner was because my manual 4runner was written off in an accident and I didn't have time to find one with a manual tranny.

I've changed the manual tranny oil in an old Ford Ranger and it didn't ruin anything.

Manual trans don't have to be flushed like autos. I would definitely change the oil in the trans, axles and transfer case if you plan on keeping the truck for any length of time. You might be shocked at the crap that comes out.
