Question after oil change

So I finally did my own oil change today...I'm at 63k miles so I figure now
is as good a time as any to switch to synthetic.


So the oil change was pretty easy, but I have just a few questions/concerns.

1) After I took out the oil plug I noticed that there wasn't a gasket in place?
The dealership did my last oil change, you think they forgot to put one on?
There is a slight possibility that it fell off into the oil pan, but I checked the pan
after I was done draining it, and saw nothing there.

2) What does the oil plug gasket look like? I put a hard rubber gasket back on..
Was that right, its not a crush washer or anything is it?

3) I let it drain for about an hour, I was doing other things. Reinstalled the plug, put in 5
quarts and checked the level. It looked like it was full already? Actually maybe a little over?
Do you think there could have still been another 1/2 quart or more in the engine?
I'm going to drive it a little, and then recheck.

As per the oil level, do u have a V6 or V8? I have the V8 and mine takes 6.5qt you should be somewhere in the middle of the two dots in the dip stick. I always put in the required amount, start it, let it run for a few min, shut it off and check the oil level. If u had it jacked up too high its possible some was still in the pan but I wouldn't think much

I have the v6, so it takes about 5.5 quarts I believe...and I didn't jack it up, drained it flat, on the driveway.

I'm probably just being paranoid, I'm way too anal about my rig.

If ur between the 2 dots ur good, closer to the middle is best so if youre closer to the bottom, i would at a bit at a time.

....That's the thing, I can't get an accurate reading at all with this *$*%* dipstick.
But before I added the oil, I checked the dipstick and it read pretty much empty. Added
5 quarts, checked it again, and its showing its over. But theres no way it is with only 5 quarts.

I will just let it sit, and recheck.. Whats about the drain plug gasket? Anyone?

I think it is supposed to be crush or fiber washer. My hardware store was out of them and I got a rubber one and it seems to be fine. We'll see how it looks when I change it I guess...

edit: yup crush washer, did you check if it was stuck to the drain hole like in this thread? I didn't.

hmmm.... I didn't check to see if it was stuck to the hole.
But when I screwed it back on with the rubber washer it seemed to go on fine.
Well I guess I will throw a piece of cardboard under the rig tonight to see if it leaks

I buy my filters from the dealer, and each one comes with an aluminum flat washer for the drain plug, taped to the top of the filter. Works for me.

Drive it a little or let it run for a little bit and measure again. I agree that the dip stick is hard to read with fresh oil. Someone on here cut cross threads on their stick with a dremel.

Sorry, but IMHO id bypass all this bullschmitt and just bring it to the dealership with the coupon that they always send out, pay the $29+tax and let them check everything, lube the chassis, zerks, fluids, rotate tires and i drink their coffee n steal a couple Keurig cups and im in the clear.

Which I have always done, BUT they don't put mobil 1 in there for 29.99...
Which is what I just switched too, plus knowing its done right. Having that time to
get to know your vehicle..

How did you get below?

I have a 2.5" lift and 32's

So after I let it sit, checked it again today and it was at the perfect level. But it
seems that you only get one correct reading out of the dipstick a day...
What I mean is that after you pull it out once, the oil seems to ride up the
"dipstick tube". Like the dipstick pulls the oil up and coats the sides. Because
after I checked it again right after, it was showing oil all over the stick. Which
makes it seem that its over...
