Question for those that've built bumpers

I'm getting ready to start building bumpers here in the near future. Very much so still in the research/learning/prep phase. I'm curious for those who have built them in the past, what size plate did you use? I've seen a few folks that have used 1/8" and a few folks that have used 3/16". I also came across some that were a combo of different sizes. I'm also looking for input on how to attach the bumper to the frame, i have an aftermarket tow hitch. Any input would be great!

Not trying to discourage you, building something like a bumper can be very rewarding and fun. But the nature of your questions make it seem like you aren't at a level where you can do this. There are reasons the builders use different wall thickness for different parts. And ultimately the final decision is based on what you want, and what you want to do. Other's say 1/4 for the winch plate, I've only ever used 3/8". That doesn't mean you can't use 1/4", I just over killed it. We are assuming you are building a front bumper, but you mentioned the tow hitch, so maybe you want to start at the rear. If so, do you plan on having a tire carrier? That changes what you can use, for sure.

I always tell people, just buy one, it's cheaper in the long run. I've built quite a few, for different vehicles and reasons. But I didn't do it to save money. Either nothing was available, or nothing I or the owner wanted was available. So if you are still serious, I recommend you look at other bumpers, find what you like and don't like. Then design yours based on what will work for you, and use the materials accordingly. Don't try to reinvent the wheel, lots of good bumpers out there you can mimic.

I have no doubt that I have the ability to make ones. I'm not sure how asking other folks what has been used as research in any way leads you to believe I am incapable of fabrication. I guess I should just willy nilly build what I think is right in lieu of research?

All I think he was saying is there is a difference between being able to make a bumper and being able to design a bumper. Your questions about plate size and hitch mounting made it sound as if you might not be accustom to fabrication and design work.

I guess I should clarify, I don't intend for this to be completely unique, I will likely borrow from several different designs out there.

I didn't mean to sound condescending. As stated, and experienced builder would know the characteristics of the thicknesses and build accordingly. 3/16" gets heavy in a hurry, 1/8" gets weak and cheesy even faster.

AND I have my own personal demons telling me most people are better off buying one than building.

So now that you have stated your confidence, will it be front or rear?

I'm sure in the end, these are going to be a lot more work than I am anticipating.

Planning to start with the rear, and then move to the front. My original thought was to use 3/16", but after looking around last night I saw that some folks use 1/8", which is what caused me to ask the question. I thinking a combo of the two would probably end up working out. Using 3/16" for the main portions and portions that would provide structural integrity, and 1/8" for the sides/portions that shouldn't really be holding any load/forces. Does that sound like rational thinking?

I have seen some folks mount by boxing the frame l_l and others just use angle l_ . With the tow hitch in the rear I don't think I will be able to box it because of how it mounts. Is there a distinct advantage to boxing it/will I be missing out on something by just using angle?
 
Not trying to hi-jack but since we are on the subject of armored bumpers.....

What is everyone doing about a rear bumper IF they have a body lift of any kind?...

I am interested in an aftermarket bumper but I'm not aware of any that will accommodate a body lift...

I have a 1.5" BL

Another option is there are plenty of places that offer a "Weld it Yourself" kits where the engineering has been completed and there is room for customization on your own part to make it yours. I've looked into a couple for my 3rd gen. plus they are about 1/2 the cost of welded one.

That is significantly cheaper than a pre-fab bumper.

There is a recycling center near my house that sells scrap steel for 0.30 per pound. I went out there last week just to get an idea of what they have. There was a 6'x6' plate, either 1/4 or 3/16 (didn't bring anything to measure with). If it was 3/16", then it would only cost 80 bucks, a little more if it was 1/4".

Lol, had to talk it over with the wife before I could jump on it, and now I've got to wait for my trailer to come back from being borrowed. I.e. My ducks are not all in a row. Lol
 
well once they all get in a row, id suggest taking a look at this thread...its out of 3/16" and mighty fine bumper... in my opinion. its the one im building mine after...

I looked through that one once before, pretty sure i subscribed to it just to keep it in the memory bank for when i get started.

For the front bumpers, im pretty fond of the cbi hybrid one, but I don't currently have a means of bending pipe, so that may not be possible.

As far as the rear goes. Im thinking at some point i'd like to put a rear tire carrier on it. It's not necessarily on the immediate to do list, because i know it could be added on later. Does anyone have a good bumper build link for someone doing a rear that did a tire carrier?
 
So I picked this up today....

The original sheet I looked at the other day was gone already. All said and done its a 4'x9'6" sheet of 1/4" plate. 25'2" of 3x3x1/4" angle. And a 6' piece of 4x3x1/4 angle. 585 pounds total. Came to 176.49, which is more than I expected, but I guess all the extra angle adds significantly to the weight (~190lbs). I plan to use the 4x3x1/4 to mount up to the frame in the rear, the rest I will cut off and what I don't use, take back for scrap. Rough math says i should be able to get 50 bucks back just for taking the extra angle back. It should be enough, or pretty close to it, to be able to do the front and back bumpers with, but who can say. Anyways


..... And so it begins.....

Prepare for some seriously heavy bumpers, if you're going fully 1/4" plate.
FWIW, It took me two sheets of 4x8" to build my front bumper, cutting very conservatively and trying to preserve as much steel as possible. I use 3/16" entirely, even for the winch plate which I then gusseted and braced with 3/8" plate.

I think I have seriously underestimated the amount of steel I need....

Also, how much actually usable steel is on that scrap sheet? Is the angle iron welded on? I don't think I would cut the welds and use the HAZ sections. I'd just cut around it, which leaves you with even less steel :(
