Question from the "toyota bible"???

ok so i was looking on the bible thing and was looking at tranys and my truck is an 87efi, it says on the chart about halfway down the first page that my first gear is 3.93 gearing where as the 86 turbo trany is 4.31. mine is a top shift and the turbo one is a forward shift.

well my question is.... if i got a turbo tranny/t case and put it in mine would all my gears be alittle lower??? is it a bolt in??? my tranny is a W56 and the turbo one is a R151F. and both are 5 speed. there are a lot of 4runners at the scrap yard near by and a few are turbos.... i was thinking if the whole tranny was geared down and not just the first gear of it that might be a cheaper way to run some bigger tires....

yes it is "bolt in item", you should look up the rest of the gear ratios. But still the best way to run bigger tires is to regear or convert to a bigger motor.

well i put in 4.56's its a big upgrade from my 4.10's, those gears were less than 100 bucks. if i can get a tranny for 50 then i could put a new clutch in at the same time and be alittle lower geared

First Gear: 4.313:1
Second Gear: 2.330:1
Third Gear: 1.436:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.838:1

these are from the W56

First Gear: 3.954:1
Second Gear: 2.141:1
Third Gear: 1.384:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.85:1

so i guess i just answered my own question lol, thought it might be worth showing others.... guess it isnt really that big of difference

haha i keep posting on my own thing but i wonder if this would improve mpgs in town if you have bigger tires??? hmmm.... any ideas with the new given facts???

if that is for real a turbo 4runner and there are two of them, that is really, really..... rare. I would love to get my hands on one.

they really arnt all that uncommon around here.... i live near bosie idaho, there are alot of 4runners around here going for farly cheap there was an 85 with a 3 inch lift regeared with 33's that i woulda bought if i had 600 bucks.... yes $600!!!! FML the body was strait and everything.

but there was a 87 4runner on craiglist for the longest time that was up on 35's that was a turbo. it ended up selling for 1300, thats only because it wasnt regeared. go take a look on bosie idaho craigslist there are some insane stuff on there even branch off into bend oregon

As you found, only the 1st gear of the turbo 4 tranny (R151F) is lower, but it is handy.
The t-case that bolts to it is gear driven, another plus (compared to the chain drive case on your W56). Plus both are a lot stronger than the ones currently in your truck.

Fourwd1- w56 t-cases were not chain driven, v6's auto, manual and 4cylinder autos were however chain driven.
