Hi there! I've lurked around unofficially for a while, but this is my first post.
My boyfriend and I recently bought a '96 4Runner. I don't actually know the correct way to list this other stuff, but it also is a 3.4L V6 with 2WD and a nifty thing that lets it shift into 4WD. It's also has a manual transmission. It had about 73,500 on it when we bought it, and it's now up to about 76,000.
So, here's what's going on. According to him, it has very, very gradually begun to have difficulty accelerating, in any gear. Last night, the apparently minor troubles intensified. From a stop, it is intensely slow to accelerate, even slower than the semis. On the highway, while in 5th, it would not go above 60 mph. And a little bitty baby hill that it never had issues with before took us two minutes to get up. It's maybe 30 yds. It has always had difficulty engaging into 1st gear upon start up. It was like that when we got it.
In addition, there was a burning smell. Not sulphur-like, as I've heard the issue with that. Possibly closer to burning plastic. We checked all the fluids, and they're all topped off.
Neither of us is mechanically inclined, so we're getting it into a shop, but I wanted to see if any of you guys might have an idea of what's wrong with it and what it's going to cost.
My dad, who does work on VW diesels, says he thinks it might be the clutch, but even he admits he's not great outside of VW land.
TL;DR? Burning smell, slow acceleration, first gear not engaging. Help?
Thanks!
