question on gears

I bought this 85 I put 33s on it.. I wnated to regear so I regeared for 35.. because next yr I wanted to buy some .. so I put 5.23.. now my question is how is it guna run on the freeway.. how fast will I be able to go and is it guna suck going hup hills..hopefully someonecould answer my question thank u

Should be fine but all depends on...... Tranny 5spd? auto? motor new old? stock or breathing good air in header out? stock choked exhaust? All big factors for a good answere.

Thanks. For replying. I really appreciate it. Well I jus rebuilt the motor completly bone stock.. 22re. Its an automatic. Not performance stuff on it..

The simple answer to your question: it will do better under all of the described scenarios than it would have with stock gearing.

On the freeway you will be at a little higher RPM than you would with 4.88 gears (the common gear of choice for 33" tires on a Toyota), but if you keep an ear on your motor she will let you know when you have reached the speed she wants to cruise at.

With the deep gears the truck ought to do better in the hills than it would with 4.88 gearing.

Than you guys for ur feed back.. so I should be ableto go up hill 70 mph. That's the one thing I was worried I don't want to be next to the big rigs struggling going 40mph

Can anyone go up hill at 70 mph with the 22re? My old 87 was lucky to hit 70 on flat ground and my 95 with the 3.0 isn't much better. I think with that kind of lift and tires it wouldn't be possible without stressing your engine and using a ton of gas. With 35's I couldn't imagine 70 up hill, but hopefully you can prove me wrong. Sorry man I have no experience on 4 bangers I've had only tundras with v8's the only ever time I had a even driven a 4 I was jus learning how to drive.. so I have no idea wat to excpect.. I heard they were really good motors thats why I got it..sorry jus a newbie at this stuff.. I appreciate ur feed back.. thank u

I wasn't trying to put you down or anything. Yeah the jump from a Tundra v8 to the 22re is a big one. They are bulletproof, but not very powerful. I loved my 22re and never had any problems with it for the three years I had it. Hills will be slow, but with the right gearing and a 5 speed you should be fine. Good call with the straight axle.

Uh no I know ur weren't putting me down.. see wat happened was I blew this motor. When I first got it and I didn't relise it was struggling I jus thought they were all like that so im jus stressing that I might do that again because im not familiar with the motor and vehicle. Its been so long and so much work I've put in too it and I haven't even bee offroading with it.. kinda depressing I wish I would have at least broke it offroading.. lol

wow i have a 92 3.slow and i can maintain 70 up small hills in 5th with stock gears and 4.11s :O...... course a 22RE auto is going to be ALOT slower.... that auto eats horsepower, not that the 22re is powerful by any means lol. should do OK with 5.29's (never seen 5.23's) and 33s but alot better with 35s!! prob gonna be screaming down the highway if you intend on doing 70. good luck!!

4.88 gears would be the ratio of choice for 33's on a 5 speed equipped truck.

Since he has a auto, you want one step lower, so the 5.29's are perfect.
