Question regarding 4x4

I'm attempting to switch gears into L4 from NEUTRAL to test 4x4. It does not make a sound but continuously beeps and does not turn solid after minutes of waiting. Could there something be wrong with the 4x4 feature of my 4Runner that requires an extra set of eyes aka the stealership? I have a Toyota warranty that covers engine parts so I'd like to take this truck in to be serviced ASAP before snow season starts in few months if there is indeed something wrong with it!

Move your shifter to N, put foot on brake, move your transfer case to L4...shift into gear...Boom, it works...

Read your manual, it will tell you what you need to know faster :-D

Thanks man, I'll check try applying brakes to see if it works! I can't remember but I am pretty sure I did that first time though because I live in an apartment complex with a slight hill-shaped parking lot where I back in my truck every day so I wouldn't want my 4Runner to roll backwards into the grass behind it when in neutral. I will give it another shot and see what pans out from there.

Appreciate the timely response!

Keep trying. Ours wouldn't go into 4lo for the longest time. Just try switching it each time you drive it and eventually it should start working.
Here's how I "exercise" the 4lo:
Normal switch to 4hi while driving.
Stop truck and switch to neutral.
While brake on switch to 4lo.
*light blinks on and off till it engages ("4lo" stays lit)
Switch to drive and drive around a little.
Engage dif lock to make sure it works.
Stop truck again and switch to neutral.
Switch back to 4hi.
*lights blink until "4lo" light is off*
Switch back to drive.
Drive away and switch back to 2wd.

Advice is all good. The actuator gets stiff if it doesn't get regularly used (recommendation is at least once/month). Worst case it will have to be replaced, which is expensive. Many people have luck with freeing it up just by continually cycling it on a daily basis until it gets unstuck.

Note: Once it starts beeping you need to start over. The beeping means the system has given up, declared defeat, and will not try again until you go back to the beginning of the process.

Occasionally I will need to move the transmission back into park or drive then go back to neutral, just to put the gears and stuff in a slightly difference place and make it easier to engage. A poor mans sycro of sorts.
