Question: Rolling backwards in drive noise?

Hey all,

Twice now I have rolled back a foot or less while in drive on a hill.

Both times the car made a loud clicking sound. First time the hill was severe and the second not so severe. I've never had that happen in any other cars.

This normal? Is it damaging? I'm not too happy as it sounds like the transmission is getting damaged. But sometimes it's going to happen (roll back).

Any thoughts?

It's a 2016 Limited with 3600 Mi on it.

It's normal- it's the ABS making that noise. If you drift back far enough it will stop the truck and hold you in place.

I believe it is the hill start assist applying the brakes so you don't roll back farther. Mine does it as well.

I thought for a second it might have been the ABS.

It never "assisted" lol. But I did what I could to move forward ASAP. Next hill I'll give it a shot.

I had a 2007 BMW 335i that was a stick, they put in a 2 second hill assist into it. It was active the moment you let off the brakes. I kinda hated it as it dumbed down the car (except for recently, most all my cars were a stick).

i'm gonna have to check this out. occasionally, leaving the ol' liquor store with banked parking, i'll hear this after putting it into D (backing out of the spots puts you nose up to pull out). i keep waiting longer after putting it into D thinking it's the transmission, as my Outback didn't make the sound.

Do you mean that if I depress the brake "firmly" that it will hold for the time it takes to take my foot off the brake and put it on the accelerator?

I can resolve this problem by putting my left foot on the brake and my right foot on the accelerator and timing the two to avoid rolling backwards.
This is unacceptable for a car with Toyota's reputation.

On my 2013 TE it rolls back a little and makes the noise. If I let it continue, the brakes release and it rolls freely. Maybe it's just a reminder to hit the brakes.

One time I let it roll back longer it the stopped the TE completely and stopped the engine. Made a loud noise -- won't do that again.

It’s not conventional hill assist like you find on manual or dual clutch transmitions, A regular automatic transmition does not need hill assist normally so it doesn’t automatically hold the brakes. I think that was more designed for steep hills or unexpected roll back like in off road situations.

Tbh I find it only helpful as a reminder that I’m rolling backwards but useless as a hill holder since it’ll roll back 20 ft and never stop. Apparently I’ve never correctly activated it. My 1980’s Subaru simple mechanical hill hold worked better.

I almost had a heart attack the first time cause I thought the same thing... I was parked on a hill with a trailer with ATVs. It felt like the ass end of the truck was hopping and having the trailer attached makes it sound ten times worse.

I think this is exactly what it’s for, a reminder that your rolling backwards and slows you down just a bit Incase your coming off an obstacle. I did not find any mention of hill start assist in the manual.
