Question: what do to when hydroplaning?

What would you do in my situation?

The initial poster is talking about running from a normal wet road surface into a standing water puddle of short duration. If not for the puddle, he probably wouldn't have had a problem. Prior to hitting puddle, his road speed may have been Ok for just a wet road condition.

This is accurate.
 
Something that is all to familiar growing up in northern california with light weight old toyota 4x4's with half bald mud terrains you start to feel the rear move around lighten up off the gas and once it settles back down right back into the throttle it almost becomes second hand nature.
 
Also important (and not mentioned yet), keep your backside clenched. Don't want to soil yerself! :laugh:
 
If you tried everything and you know you are going to crash, at the last instant remove hands from wheel. This will help keep from breaking arm, hand, dislocating shoulder or other injury caused by wheel whipping around with your hand on it. Best position for hands at time of impact are beside your head.

Good point on the hands, I see NASCAR drivers do this on the in car cameras before they hit the wall.

I did work with a lady that had a car pull out in front of her. She pushed the horn with her hand as she hit the car at 50 mph. Her only injury was a broken wrist. I still haven't figured out why she felt the need to blow the horn while she was colliding with someone.

Could the airbag blowing out caused her to break her wrist? (assuming that her car had frontal airbags)
 
Definitely cancel the cruise control. One time I was driving in my FWD car with low tread on the front tires on a wet road, and the cruise control decided it needed to downshift for some reason. I guess one of the wheels lost traction (no electronic aids or limited slip with a whopping 128 ft-lb of torque), and I started sliding a little. I cancelled cruise control, and I was back in control quickly.

Cruise should be managed with the traction control systems nowadays, but otherwise a solid point.

edit: I guess the "Take foot off the pedals and cruise" is a bit ambiguous in that regard. I'm sure Thai meant coast.

Speed to enduce hydroplaning

As a pilot we constantly think about conditions and we have all sorts of engineering companies and government agencies giving us advice on how to avoid accidents.

We're given the following formula as a GUIDELINE for aircraft.

9 x square root of tire pressure = hydroplaning.

So if your tire pressure is 50 the square root is close to 7. 7 x 9 = 63. Don't go that fast on standing water.

This number would vary based on tread, width, and other road conditions as well such as hitting a bump at the wrong time.

In cars we're given 35 mph as a threshold.

Keep in mind that just because 1 wheel is hydroplaning that not all necessarily are, but the lack of traction and pulling force will accumulate on the other wheels.

When we slide in aircraft I certainly don't put my hands in the air and say a prayer!
 
Depends somewhat...

The advice I give and have heard is let of the gas and let the vehicle "sit back in the water", the best example I can think of there is just watching a Hydro-Foil Boat in water. It speeds up and starts floating above the water, when it slows down the hull falls under the water's edge again. Same concept when you let off the gas, vehicle reduces speed enough to stop hydroplaning.
 
I generally let off the gas slightly but not fully, as I feel like the forward momentum of the car is helpful in getting out of the situation. If I start spinning, take my foot off completely.
