Questions about 1999 LTD

Hey, i recently purchased a 1999 4runner. The previous owner pained many of the interior panels blue (around the center console, vents). Does anyone know what i could use to remove the paint. Also, does the 1999 4runner LTD have a chip in the key?

im sure you could use acetone or paint remover to remove the paint, but im afraid you might discolor or damage the plastic. you might wanna try to repaint them black. as far as the key, there is no chip in the 99 keys.

I have a chip in my key. It was quite expensive to buy an extra.

thats odd, my 99' doesnt have it and neither does my cousins 00'... ive seen blank keys on ebay, not sure if they have the chips in them. i guess the easiest way to find out is to have a chipless key made and see if it starts.

I believe all the limited 4runners had the chipped key.

I have a '99 limited and there is a transponder in the key. It will not start from a blank copy.

if i were you, id get a dash kit and cover it with brushed aluminum or wood trim.

OK...I have to ask... did you buy this 4runner from a private sale in Burnaby, BC? I remember checking out a 99 with all its trim painted blue, I don't think (hope) many people would do that, it was a rebuilt that had been in a rollover and the guy selling it owned a bodyshop that replaced the entire roof. If it's the same truck I know why you want to change those trim pieces : didn't look too hot like that...

Yes, it's a separate piece. It doesn't come with the wood kit.

Jason where is a good place to find double din head units? i am having a hard time locating anything.

PLEASE don't buy expensive audio gear at a big box store. Those stores are fine for cd's and movies and such, but big ticket items really should be bought someplace where the staff knows what they're selling and how to sell it. You go to best buy to buy a thousand dollar double din receiver and they're going to push whatever they have most of in the stockroom.

go to crutchfield.com, see what double dins fit your car. when you have the model numbers (make sure you take down a few!) go to froogle.com and plug them in there.

another great low-price resource i've found is a site called 'hookedontronics.com'.

they have awesome prices, and i've ordered 3 items from them, so i can safely say they are reliable and honest.
