Hi all,
I'm a) New here, b) new to cars, c) new to 4Runner's and d) I'm Australian (so I apologise if some of my terminology is different).
Anyway, I got myself a 90 4Runner as my first car (and it's brilliant!!). I have a few questions relating to the ignition and idle speeds.
I learnt to drive in my dad's 99 Pajero (manual) and mum's 05 Outlander (auto). When I was learning, I was taught to start the car with my foot on the brake. I find that my 4Runner actually requires me to tab the throttle a bit to get it to run. Starting the car also takes a lot longer than the other cars we've got (only 3 or so seconds when it's warm, up to 8 when it's cold). Dad mentioned that this could be due to the other cars having an 'electronic ignition'... anyone care to elaborate?
Secondly, my idle speed isn't constant like it is with our other cars. If I start it warm, it'll idle at about 1500rpm, but after driving 5 or so k's, it drops to 1000-1200prm. I have also been in the situation where (particularly facing up a hill) I've been waiting at a set of lights and after a min or so the revs drop and the engine will die (this is with the foot on the brake). This forces me to restart and keep the revs up with the throttle, and just relying on the handbrake until the lights change.
Thirdly, when I turn the AC on, the revs drop by 300rpm or so (noticeable difference). This doesn't happen with either of the other cars.
I'm wondering if I can get any explination as to why this is? What's normal and what isn't for a car of this age, and is there anything I can do to fix it?
Car is a manual and running on petrol (unleaded) in these situations (LPG is a whole different issue!).
