Questions about tire sizes for 4th gen 4Runner

I have on '04 4Runner and it's time to change the tires. I've done lots of looking and research and have a few questions:

1 - It looks like I have a lot more selection if I can go with 265/70/17. Is this possible, will these tires fit without any modification to the vehicle.

2 - I can't afford to replace the spare right now. If I do have a flat with the 265/70/17 and have to replace with the 265/65/17, how much of an issue is that going to cause? I know this isn't an ideal situation, but the spare would only need to basically get me about 30 miles home worst case. And I'll replace the spare before I do any long road trips or anything like that...just want to know if I'll have an immediate issue if I have a flat and have to use it.

3 - What tires to go with. I know everyone loves the Revos, but I just can't afford those right now. I was looking at some Perreli Scorpion STR at DiscountTire because they are fairly cheap and see to have decent reviews. Any other suggestions for less than $125 or so per tire?

1. The tires will fit without any mod's

2. This shouldn't be an issue. I believe someone posted a similar experience (Thai maybe???) and the electronics didn't protest.

3. I just bought the Terra Grapplers in 265/70/17 for $603 out the door. They are a little more than $125/tire but less than the ~$700 for the revos

Surely you and your 4Runner are worth the premium...and no, money doesn't grow on trees for me either but the thought that "fairly cheap" and "decent reviews" would guide my tire choice seems, well, it seems piss poor.

The tires are the only thing between you and the road. Cheap tires and decent reviews lead to poor performance. Pay the premium and you'll never have to regret it.

That is why I went with the Nitto's. Consumer reports rated them better (albeit marginally) than the Revo's and they were $100 less for the set.

So are the Perreli junk tires then? I've always heard great things about them, but the fact that they're cheaper than the others was the reason I asked about them.

The Perreli is actually only about $20 less than the Revos on Tirerack, so it's not like they're a cheap tire. I was looking at them because I can get a really good deal on a pair locally ($100 new), as opposed to $160 for the Revos anywhere around me that I look. So in reality, I'm buying a tire that's only $20 cheaper (based on Tirerack's pricing), but am able to save considerable money because I can get a good deal on it.

As for the reviews, well every tire I've looked at so far only has what I'd consider decent reviews. I haven't found a tire yet that has all positive reviews...

In addition, I don't know that the Revos are even the tire for me.

I really am not concerned too much about off road performance anyway, we do 100% city and highway driving. The Revo is listed on tirerack as an off-road all terrain tire, and I just don't need one of those for my application.

I live in Texas, it never snows here, so that's not an issue for me either.

I'm basically just looking for a good touring tire, and the Perreli seemed to fit the bill.

So, having said all that - does anyone know anything about the Perrelis I'm looking at?

Heck, whether it is the Revo or some other top notch tire was the point I was making. I agree, if you are aiming to maintain the streetability of your 4Runner than there are far better choices than the Revo or A/T tire.

My retreiver has yet to catch a rabbit off our hill. He is absolutely clueless...He is more like an 80lb lap dog.

Road Tires

If you are not looking for "off road" tires, do not overlook the Michelin Cross Terrains.

I know you will react w / the $ question, but if you read Bill42's
response on this thread [he's spot on], & then shop Sam's, Price Club, Costco, etc, factor in no freight, free add-ons, the price looks a lot better.

Performance? I work off road - site work & development - and while I don't cope w / rocks & mountains, I am routinely in deep mud, sand, and snow. I can be a little bold, as there is always equipment around to pull me out. Never once have these tires given the slightest impression I would get stuck.

On road performance needs no discussion: most all experts rate them way superior, as do I, and I do a lot of hiway also: my truck is my office.

The Dunlops they replaced were the most dangerous tires I have ever experienced: capable of total hydroplane @ 40 mph with any
amount of standing water. Complete, pure junk; Toyota should have researched & known better.

All the stuff on Tirerack are peoples' reviews and opinions. At least Consumer reports does REAL tests that are not subjective. I won't rule out people's opinion but I am certainly not going to rule out an objective test by an independant organization.

It never ceases to amaze me how much people don't like CR. They are not the bible but I do think they make fair, unbiased and qualified tests of products.

I have to admit I agree regarding CR. I have an e-membership. In fact, I used it to assist me in choosing my 4Runner to begin with.

I also like Tire Rack. The database and user feedback is from such a large group with real world driving experience.

Of course, I also used Edmunds, and just about every article I could find on the internet. Plus, I even used (shhhhhh) my mother-in-law's experience with her 2nd gen.

I had some Pirelli Scorpions on one of my 4X4's - think it was an Explorer but I'm not sure. IMHO they are a very good tire. Good traction, not too noisy, good in the mud and muck here in VT in the spring, and, as you noted, a good price. I think I found a review in one of the 4 wheeler magazines before I bought them which tipped me off to them - they got a stellar review. Now all of this was probably 3-4 years ago so things may well have changed since then.:clap:
