ok, if its below 32 degrees outside, it wont start. Is there any solution or common problem causing this with these?

When I put it in drive, it jerks like the tranny is bad but it only started doing that after one of my friends put it in 4wd. I put it back on the 2 and unlocked the front wheels. Is that all there is to it?

Whats that thing on the front bumper?

I have a deck lamp button. Wheres my deck and wheres my lamp? Is that about the stock height in the picture? I know nothing about trucks but it seems kinda high to me.

is there a place to get cheap parts for em? anything at all, performance, looks, anything.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head right now. Thanks.

ok I put it on a diagnostics thingy this morning and the only code it gave me was a fault in the starter circuit. The guy who had it before me rewired it with a push button ignition. He just cut the wire on the front of the starter and ran that to a push button. Now Im told there is a 2ns starter wire and that that may be the reason it wont cold start. And if I just run that along with the push button, it should remedy the problem. Any thoughts?

A few answers

Couple of good things if you didn't know,

You bought an 86, this is the first year for all 22r's to become 22re's. I bought an 86 and converted it to SAS for that reason alone.

Because of the E its electronic fuel injected, thats a good thing, it means more power and it can run at any angle as well. There are literally tons of aftermarket parts availiable for your engine to make it fast or slower, ie rock crawling.

The bad thing is you got the first year for IFS, Independent front suspension which limits the amount of travel you have off road, its fairly intense to change it to a Solid axle as well. IFS is often refered to as Inferior Front Suspension, but thats what just about everyone has on this board, it can be worked with however it is more expensive to modify and easier to break.

The thing on the front is a brush guard without the extensions to cover your lights, generally its just extra weight unless you have one that you can add a winch too, or maybe custom add some lights.

As for your problems, check out www.4x4wire.com for a nice board with nice people who can help you out more. I can proabably answer them all but I don't have the time right now, my wife is recovering from surgery and I have to make dinner for my two kids.

Ask away though as I'll be on later tonight with more time and I might can help further.

T,

1st gens are probably still my favorite and there what got me started in 4wheeling.

Couldnt pass it up

"ok, if its below 32 degrees outside, it wont start. Is there any solution or common problem causing this with these?"

Generally its your battery but I'm not 100% as you have the custom starter wiring.

"When I put it in drive, it jerks like the tranny is bad but it only started doing that after one of my friends put it in 4wd. I put it back on the 2 and unlocked the front wheels. Is that all there is to it?"

With older 4wd systems you need to back the tension out of the drivetrain, to do this simply put it in reverse after all 4wd is shut off/disengaged and back up around 15 ft, this releaves all tension that has built up in the system. You can also check the tranny fluid as this could be a problem seeing as you have an automatic obviously.

"I have a deck lamp button. Wheres my deck and wheres my lamp?"

Should be an interior light, thats all.

"Is that about the stock height in the picture? I know nothing about trucks but it seems kinda high to me."

If its not stock height I would believe its is just blocks in the rear and the torsion bars possibly cranked up a little, looks fairly stock from the small pics that you have.

"is there a place to get cheap parts for em? anything at all, performance, looks, anything."

Downey performance, All Pro offroad, Northeast offroad, Performance products, etc.... You have many many more options than the 4th gen owners and even some of the third gen's. Search for those brands online.

Oh if you want to go "Badass on the engine, LC Engineering is the best for your engine, based on my prior experiance.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head right now. Thanks.

Your welcome, hope I helped.

Most 85's are EFI as well, I did a butt-load of research before I bought my 3rd runner about 5 years ago. That's why I got the 85, it was the first year of the 22RE and the last year of the solid front axle, best of both worlds...

AS for the 32degree not starting thing. It could be a coolant temp sensor. There is a couple of sensors at the front of the intake, one of them is it. But they both can contribute to no cold starts. I had the same problem with mine about 3 years ago, and I changed out the coolant switch (I think the green one) and it does fine now. But I would bet it has something to do with that, because your cold-start injector (which could also be out) is basically your choke, runs off of 2 or 3 switches/sensor, so any of those go out, it's not gonna want to start at colder temperatures.

Completely agree

But where I was buying my Runner in Colorado Springs it was a well known "secret" that the 85's were the best of both worlds. Thats why I said all 22r were 22re's.

When I bought my first Runner, I paid 750 for it because the 22re needed a rebuild, the cheapest 85 in the Colorado area with a 22re was about 4500 bucks. I rebuilt the engine for around 700 and did the SAS for about 1200 with an 85's front axle that I got for 50 bucks. It was worth it to me because of knowledge I gained, I was only 21 at the time, and because in the end I had a new engine, new front axle, I rebuilt both, and a few amenaties that were harder to come by on the 85's such as the clinometer and other little things.

If I could do it all again I would go the same route just because I built it tough as nails and knew how to fix it on the trail quickly because I built it all. If I had bought an 85 with the RE, I would have had to do less to it.

I loved that Runner too and I miss it from time to time.

BTW, you don't make any money on builds like that, you always loose when you sell them.

That "thing" on your front bumper is an aftermarket grill guard, really only useful for mounting xtra lights on.

The Deck Lamp switch is for a light mounted in the cargo area, drivers side.

For "cheap parts", I wouldn't reccomend Downey or NWOR, their stuff is waaay over priced and over rated.
Check LCE or DOA for engine performance.
All-Pro Offroad, Advanced Offroad Research, Marlin Crawler, Front Range Off Road, Inch Worm Gear, Over The Top Industries, and Sky Mfg are among the top makers/suppliers of Toyota specific suspensions, drive trains, armor, etc.

The pushbutton starter starter switch is a common work around for a wiring problem that shows up frequently in mid-80's Toyotas.
I had to do the same thing on my 83 4WD and 84 2WD p/u's.

Your truck looks like it's about stock height.
