Questions on a 2011 used 4runner

Edmonton

New member
Hi All,

I know these questions may have already been posted numerous but I would really appreciate any kind of feedback I can get.

I am looking into a 2011 4runner avaliable in California that I would like to purchase and bring it to Edmonton

1. The 4R is being offered by a dealership and according to them the only way I can avoid paying Cali taxes is by having them ship it to me at an agreed upon location. I suggested Montana since it's closer for me but the dealer would like to ship to Washington

2. I did a check on the 4R through Autocheck. It indicated a lien on the car (I am assuming from the previous owner). Mentioned it to the dealer who indicated they are in the process of clearing the title which would take 20 days. Is that normal ??

3. Dealer indicated that I need to make sure to wire the funds to have the car locked. I told him I will pay a holding deposit. Is it ok to wire the funds without getting the title cleared? Delaer seems to he quite reputable with 120 locations.

4. The dealer was supposed to get back to me with the final price 2 days ago but has not done so. Is that normal?

Imho

Do not do a "sight unseen" deal. Very smart idea not to wire the funds. Use an escrow service if you must have this out-of-state vehicle. Inspect it first. You shouldn't have to pay CA taxes. Have them collect the sales tax for your home (state you plan to register it in) state. Twenty days is normal for a title turn-around. No T4Rs closer to you?

FYI, big scam with escrow sevice billed as ebay. I received an very ebay looking email, calle debay and was advised it's a scam out of Romania. People were losing 2MM dollars a day to these guys.

Post the ad. Something seems weird if it's $10000 off. There's not one 2011 runner under 30k for sale. See if one of the members on here in Cali can check it out for you.

I have indicated to the dealer that I will be using an independent inspector (CARCHEX | Extended Car Warranty, Auto Warranty, Car Inspections is one option). He was okay with it. I am in Alberta, Canada and would like to bring the car across the border with the necessary paperwork. I have that part covered. It's just getting the car titled and also the satisfaction that it is in good shape. Being a 2011 covers the warranty for atleast another 3 years on the major components. Not fully aware of escrow but will look into that

Common sense is to use a reputable escrow - contact your personal banker who will recommend one . . .

@Zachb_NW. It is actually a $10000 saving for me if I bring the car to Canada (T4Rs are insanely priced here-$49000 retail on a limited). I would save around $4000 if I was buying the car new in US. Let me see if I can get the ad.

A 2-Wheel drive 4Runner for Canada? Are you sure you wouldn't rather have a 4-Wheel drive 4Runner? It seems that for your winters or off-roading in Canada, a 4-Wheel drive would be better.

4RFan. Thats a duh on my part. You are perfectly right. I was looking for a 4x4. Got too carried away with the price. My Bad!!! Will keep looking. To think of it it worked well.
