Quick acceleration causing smell like someone ripped one?

I have a 2005 limited 4WD with about 43,000 miles which runs great but every time I quickly accelerate it smells like someone is ripping it up.

I just got it two months ago and I don't believe the issue has been happening the entire time.

You can do one of a few things to help. Use better fuel (top tier stations only and use higher octane), roll you rear window down less frequently, or get a side exit exhaust so it gets directed away from the vehicle better.

Yeah is your back window down when this happens? If so it's definitely exhaust....

Otherwise...did you get your vehicle undercoated?

My buddy bought a used 2005 SR5 and his makes a different bad smell under hard acceleration with the back window up...and we've decided it was the undercoating the dealership put on burning off a little

Someone told me this is due to the sulfer content and that lower/poor grade fuel will cause this? He refered to it as "belching" or "the engine is farting" because of bad gas.

I'm pretty sure it's not the fuel. But even if it was, is it worth spending a few more dollars every fill-up to prevent the smell? I think not.

Your cats r gettn a little stuffed. No worries is semi normal but when runin reg petro all the time the ol cats get more gook in em.

I've had this issue since day 1 and since I knew at some point I'd be putting a exhaust on I figured maybe replacing the rear cat with a high flow unit might help. Anyone try that?? In addition I plan to run it out the back of the passenger tire so like others I should have a good experience with that. I like to be able to have the rear window down in the summer.

Its your Cats, there's a TSB on them. I finally took the time to take mine in and they replace your whole system no charge.

The contact stated that there was a rotten egg odor in vehicle. The service dealer referred the consumer to the manufacturer, and they stated that the odor was coming from the fuel that was being used in the vehicle because new england fuel had a higher rate of sulfur.

Yep its the cats. Some 4Runners seem to be worse than others. I don't notice it much unless:

1) The rear window is down or

2) I am following behind our truck in another vehicle. When the driver puts the hammer down it stinks.


Dealers will warranty "defective cats" but the issue is a lot of places will just blame it on the fuel :bash: and not acknowledge the cats are defective.

Good aftermarket cats like Carsound/Magnaflow would take care of the issue Im sure. Have the old ones cut out and new ones welded in. This is the route I'm going to go if/when it becomes an issue for me.

Another option that seems to work for some people is change the exhaust pipe exit to the side either by changing the catback system or just changing the tip. That way the exhaust doesnt roll back in through the open back window.

I had a similar problem and it was due to a leak in my water pump (The smell was the coolant hitting the hot exhaust manifold and burning off). Check your coolant level to see if it is low or leaking.
