Quick (but longish) tire question

I'm getting new tires tomorrow (finally!) and hopefully going to get Duratracs if I can figure this out. I have 265/70R16 right now, but they don't make Duratracs in that size.

I've seen they do make them in 265/75R16, so a 5mm difference. I'm a not a tire expert, but to the normal person this isn't much. If I do get this size, how much would it affect the speedometer, odometer, and fuel economy? What pressure should I run them & what load range? I don't do much offloading (some mud, gravel roads) and not really much towing, it's mostly a spur of the moment thing if I'm going to tow anything.

If you guys don't recommend them, what is another alternative? I read some mixed reviews on the silent armor but the 50,000 miles warranty makes me wonder about the tread life.

I'm also open to other brands as long as the cost isn't more than the Duratracs, have good traction, (wet and dry) aggressive looks and are decently quiet with good ride quality. Tread life has to be at least around 65-70,000 miles, hopefully more with a good warranty. I was quoted $810.10 for 5 Silent Armors, not including alignment. I'm going to be mounting and balancing them myself.

Ps: I need the speedo to be as close to accurate as possible. The cops around here are extremely anal about speeding. You can get away with 5-7mph over, most of the time anything over that you'll get pulled over.

I was playing with this earlier today. A 265/75/16 should be about the same as a 265/70/17 which is 31.6 and some change (and what I want, the 17" version)

duratracs are awesome, they're my dream tire. Just based on everything i've read, disclaimer, i don't own them.

The Duratracs are a very good tire. I've heard nothing but great reviews about them. They are a heavy tire though, so they'll affect your fuel economy accordingly. You shouldn't lose more than about 1 MPG though, probably less.

As far as recommendations, I can't say enough good things about the BFG A/T's that I'm running. They're a little lighter, have a very good looking aggressive tread, and road noise is exceptionally low. I'm on my second set (had 265/75r16's on my 3rd gen) and I don't plan on switching anytime soon.

Shop around, and whatever tire you decide to buy... but it from Discount Tire. They'll beat anyone's prices even with rebates. I scored $100 off on my current set from their list price. Free shipping too.

If you do little off roading, why do you want Dura Tracs? While they are great tires, they are not optimal for 98%-daily-driver-on-road-use.

Regardless, 265/75/R16 Dura Tracs have an overall diameter of 31.7". Remember that the "75" designates a profile of 75% (NOT 75mm) of the 265mm tread width. So, going from a 70% profile to a 75% of 265mm tread width will be much more than 5mm. Just for laughs, I quickly hit a few different tire web sights (as you did not mention which 265/70/R16 tires you currently have on your T4R) and according to that size on Yokohama Geolanders, Nitto Terra Grapplers and Bridgestone Dueler EVO's, a 265/70/R16 tire has an overall diameter of about 30.5 to 30.6". So, you're talking about a diameter increase of about 1". Yes, it will affect your speedometer. Not by much, but you will be reading a little bit slower speed than what you are actually doing.

I actually think I might go with the BFG A/T. The Duratracs are a fantastic tire, but disappointing that they don't make them in my size.

Right now I have 2 Firestone wilderness LE on it, the original Bridgestone dueler (which was the spare), and some offhand I got used until today because the other was bald. It's going to need an alignment, I know that.
 
My opinion:

The Cooper Discoverer AT3 is available in your stock size for $150ish each delivered to your front door from discounttiredirect.com. It's the #1 AT tire on the market currently, is made in USA, and has a fantastic tread life warranty. It excels at rain and snow, will be quiet on the road, and is less expensive than the others you've mentioned.

Plus, there are rebates and discounts available.

Bag those up, have about $550 invested total....then take them to Walmart or a tire shop and get them mounted and balanced for $50 more bucks and boom you're done.
 
Opinions on Cooper Discoverer AT3 vs Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2 vs BFGoodrich All Terrain TA/ KO? Also, any Michelin recommendations? I know Michelin owns BFG BTW.

Right now I'm leaning toward the Coopers.

i think the bfg looks the best. personal opinion, sorry, i'm no help. but i'm in the market for new shoes too
 
Michelin ltx ms2 are imo the best tire out for the 98% that only do a little occasional offroading. They are excellent in snow, ice and rain. They also last a long time. With tires, you really get what you pay for. If not Michelin, then i would look at Cooper and Yokohama.

I live in Atlanta. We've had snow before, last one was winter 2010-2011 and before that it was 2008, so snow and ice isn't that big of a concern for me.

I like Michelin but they don't look that aggressive. That's the whole point of this, aggressive looks with good road manners. Plus, LTX MS2 are EXPENSIVE.

100% agree on BFG's looks. Coopers look good too, and so do the Revo 2's. Too many decisions, it's like buying gum in a gum shop, you don't know which you want and can't tell if they're good unless you spend money on the product. Guess that's why there are reviews, and owners reviews/ opinions. But tires are a lot more expensive than some gum!
 
I have the Cooper AT3 and love them. 265 70/R17. Stock, no lift, no trimming etc. Aggressive looks, very low noise. Excellent hydropaining resistance. I have not been off road on anything more than a dirt road but they should perform as well as most all terain tires.

It's down between the Coopers and Bridgestone's. They're both pretty good, come with white lettering (I like it, it goes with my white paint), both look good. I have the Bridgestone Dueler HT on there now, which is a 10 year old tire, that was a spare, and it still holding air and is better than the others on it, which is pretty pathetic.

So, if any of you had the same requirements (quiet ride, good traction in wet & dry, aggressive looks with average to above average tread life, would it be the Coopers or Bridgestone's?
 
I used the b-stone Revo2 on my LandRover for a while. I liked the performance on and off road. Fairly quiet, good in snow, good in the desert, ok in mud (to be expected). Overall wear was average, I had the 'E' rated which some claim don't wear as well as the passenger versions. I would buy again.
 
^^^^ See how the Cooper has all those open channels? That's what you want. You want water, snow, mud, etc. to be able to evacuate the tread. This is why the BFG is the most over-rated AT tire on the planet. It looks super aggressive, but functionally it's a horrible tire. It's 35 year old technology. I've owned 2 or 3 sets of BFGs and it's unlikely I'll ever run them again. They are miserable in mud and snow, have high rolling resistance, and can be noisy too because of the interlocked tread pattern. The Coopers, on the other hand, have lots of open channels and will excel at anything you point them toward.

Look for a tire that has a similar type of tread pattern, there are a few others that are pretty good too. But I think the Cooper AT3 is going to be my next tire. If so, I will get the LT "C" version for it's deeper tread.
