Quick question about oil for V8

SAE 5W-30 API Rating SN or higher. (Found in your owner's manual)

As long as it meets those requirements, you can put whatever you want. I like Amsoil Signature Synthetic 5W-30 withe their extended life oil filters.

I'm using this as well, runs smoother than with mobile 1. My oil was dark as hell when I changed it too. Going different outcome with amsoil.

Going to start testing the oil at 10k service intervals and see how well the Amsoil is holding up (I'm only on my second oil change using Amsoil, not that I don't trust 15k, but I felt 10k was a "safer" bet, so in 9k miles I'll test it and make a review/analysis for people.)

Interesting, never heard of the Fram "Ultra" line, looked it up and it does seem to be fairly similar to the higher end filters. Would have to research it more to verify; but then again based on the link I posted above a lot of the "higher end" filters seem to be similar to each other. So I guess the Fram "Ultra" might be a rebranded "higher end" filter?

I was the same way, would never use a Fram orange can of death. I was originally a Purolator guy and saw that there seems to be lots of pleat tears in the media. I spent some time doing research and reading lots of threads in the Oil Filter section of BobIsTheOilGuy. Seems Fram has acknowledged and fixed a lot of QA issues they had a few years ago and they came out with the Ultra which looks like it stands next to M1 or any other top tier filter.

You can also use 5W20 if you want, per a Toyota TSB.

If you are using synthetic anyway, 0W30 is theoretically better than 5W30. The viscosity when it's warm is the same, but when it's cold (even summer daytime temperature may be cold for the oil) 0W30 is closer to what the engine wants than 5W30. 0W30 is never thinner than what the engine wants at operating temperature, so it's safe even in the summer. Why don't all cars call for 0W30 or 0W20? They are starting to (like the 5th gen), but 0WXX oils were not common until recently and they are still more expensive than conventional oil, which isn't available in 0WXX versions as far as I know.

I'm going with either 0W30 or 0W20 for mine next time.

Running Mobil 1 EP 0w20 in mine right now, so far so good. I've seen a variety of used oil analysis over at bobistheoilguy and the 4.7's are extremely easy on oil. I learned a lot about oil over there.

Friends of mine is a dealer and tested his at 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k and they've all been the same since initial test. He's convinced how awesome it is. That's why I started using it because I was present for all his testings.

Im in E TOWN as well and have never owned anything but a Toyota Truck from 93 runner newer Tacoma and my current 03 4runner. Have always ran Amsoil 5W-30 all year long with Factory filters only Amsoil in all diffs and drivetrain and no issues and no leakage. On my 93 4runner when I switched the diffs to synthetic a bit of seeping but just replace the gasket seals in diff and all is well. The only reason leaks happen when synthetic it introduced into a old dirty area is because it washed out all the grime that was holding seal or broken down gasket and that's a good thing. Everybody knows an Amsoil rep.

Good to know. I didn't think anyone else would be crazy enough to try it! Did you notice any difference compared to other weighs of oil? I'm hoping for slightly better fuel economy, mainly in the winter.

I use Amsoil Signature Series 5W30 or Redline 5W30 with a OEM Toyota filter. Great stuff!

I usually use 5w30 mobile 1, however im interested in going to the 0w30 for the winter time. Probably wont make a difference at all but I'll let you know.

The engine feels slightly more responsive at cold and hot operating temps. Had 0w30 AFE in prior to switching. I have seen a slight increase in fuel economy. Will be sending off a sample after this interval to see how things are going with the switch. But I do think it was worth switching over too.
