Quick question about the rear wiper arm

I ordered the rear wiper arm and tried to replace it. The previous one was damaged during a car wash.

I remove the arm head cap, took off the #10 nut. See picture 1. But for some reason I was not able to remove the arm. According to the FSM, I should be able to remove the arm after removing the nut. Did I miss something? I didn't want to force it too much and damage other parts. Maybe it's just the thread rusted? Any trick to remove the wiper arm?

Window wipers are often splined onto the shaft and over time they get rusted or just stuck on there really good. Far as I know you should just need to use an itty bitty puller or equal pulling force to pop it off.

I would reccomend soaking the lil' guy in some PB Blaster or whatnot to loosen it up some.

I too had this problem today. Mine was sheared off by the garage door. So here is what you need to do.

1. Remove the Wiper Blade
2. Remove the Wiper Arm Head Cap
3. Remove the 10mm nut.
4. Use a puller or place a flat head screw driver under the Wiper Arm Assembly and pry it up.

I placed a rag on the paint and it popped right off. Since the wiper motor grommet is tapered and serrated it can be a little hard to get off. The FSM suggests cleaning the serrations of the motor grommet off with a wire brush before installing the new wiper arm assembly. Hope this helps.

Pick up a wiper arm puller at your local auto parts store. Shouldn't be more than $5.

On a side note, that rear wiper is near worthless. I changed the blade by modifying a normal wiper blade and cutting it down to size. But only half the damn thing touches the window. I bet it works great in the summer...

I replaced my rear wiper arm this summer. The old one was seriously stuck to the splined shaft. I had to get out my dremmel with the cut off wheel attachment to get it off. I had to cut out the aluminum and black plastic of the old one to finally get it to break loose.
The new wiper arm from the dealership works great. never any issue with glass contact. swipes clean.

Here's how I did it this weekend on my Land Cruiser:
1. Loosen the nut giving some clearance to the wiper arm
2. place prybar under arm, pry up against a block of wood or plastic (not the paint, and make it a wide block so you don't bend the sheet metal)
3. Tap on the nut gently (the nut protects the shaft threads) until the shaft pops loose

Wiper shafts are tapered and splined hardened steel, into the tapered hole in the aluminum wiper arm. It's a tight fit, with the splines digging into the aluminum wiper arm hole.. Soaking with PB Blaster will help, but that stuff can eat paint. A little heat would help a lot, maybe just a hairdryer.

I've done this many times, using a door trim removal tool as my prybar.

After a little cleaning, I force a little dielectric grease into the rubber seal around the wiper arm, so it can rotate smoothly.
