OK, I know this is a dumb question, but I need help. I can't figure out how to put my crossbars ON!? I just bought a '98 and the guy has factory Toyota Ski racks on his crossbars, which is great! BUT he had the whole assemblies completely off when I bought it. SO how do I put them back on, without snapping the little plastic tabs off of them? It doesn't look like the ends are supposed to come off the rails, so how do I slip them on?! He did give me the knobs to tighten them down with, but I need to get them in the rails first! HELP, I leave for Tahoe tomorrow! Any tips GREATLY appreciated!!
Quick question - could REALLY use the answer!

If I remember correctly, you have to unscrew the track from the top of the truck to slide the bars back on.
PITA, but that's how I replaced one of the damaged ones on my Wife's 97.
While the tracks were off I cleaned everything and put a fresh coat of wax on the paint before re-assembly.

Its hard to say for sure without being there and looking at it, and not knowing for sure what he did. I would start off trying the path of least resistance first, then if that don't work, you may have to resort to removing the channel rails completely.
OK, I got the endcaps off the rails. He did use some kind of cement to keep them on, how were they supposed to stay on to begin with?!
Now I've unscrewed the loops and taken their anchors out, so that I can slide on the crossbars. But the crossbars have those channel slides on each side, so how do I get their anchors to be IN THE MIDDLE of the two feet slides, so that I can screw it down to the anchors?! Once in the channel, the anchor nuts cannot get between the crossbars feet that are also sliding in the channel!?

IIRC, you leave the nut loosely threaded on the end of the knob, in its place on the bar, then insert foot, then knob anchor, then other foot in to the rail channel.
The only thing holding the end cap in is the Torx screw. If dufus PO broke the tab of the end cap that the Torx screw goes into, you need new caps, or more cement.
