Quick question on oil change...

I've been doing my own oil changes, including on my 2nd gen and 3rd gen, and am planning my first oil change on my 4th gen this weekend. I noticed the new location of the oil filter (FINALLY*!) as opposed to the previous poor location on the lower side of the block.

My question is, when I break the filter free, will I still get much oil spillage into the "new" catch housing and will I need to catch whatever drains out the weep hole in the housing?

*Man, am I glad the filter has been relocated. I can't say that enough...

I take it you have the v6 with the filter on top near the front. I am planing attaching a small rubber hose to the nipple and run the oil that might spill into a tin can.

Yes, I have the V6. Guess I should revise my sig.

Ok, sounds like what I expected... That I'll have to catch whatever spills into the housing, either before it hits the drain (unlikey) or after from below. No biggie...

Too bad our search key is not working right. Someone put up a picutre of un-screwing the oil filter and catching the run off in a 12 ounce plastic cup. That is what I did, then I cleaned the rest with a paper towel.

Make sure you pull the rubber cap off of the nipple. If you don't the cup just fills & spills. I have to confess, my first oil change was a bit meesy:bash: Fortunately I just retightened the filter and figured it out...

I can type nipple but not re**** (r*e*t*a*r*d):lmao: The filter cracks me up...

Reset oil replacement reminder light?

I thought I read how one Resets the oil replacement reminder light. But can't seem to find it. Anyone care to give me some guidance?

I just glanced thru the Owners Manual and didn't see anything about resetting any reminders. Then again, the Owners Manual only disusses CHECKING fluids, not replacing them.

Select total miles on the odometer.

Shut the ignition off.

Push and hold the tripmeter reset button.

Turn the key on but don't start it.

Watch the Maint light flash a few times then go out.

Release tripmeter reset, shut it off or start it up, you're done

This brings up another small but important subject my Dealer for some reason over looked including it with the other manuals.

Toyota has a little Scheduled Maintenance Guide. since I could not find the needed Info. in the main Owners Manual I called Toyota, they told me I should have been given it with the other manuals.

Anyway they sent me one and it has this small note about resetting the mileage reminder after the oil is changed.

I did a Google Search and found my answer.

I am sure it's the same for all their 4RunnerTrucks.

I drain the oil first then take off the filter. Once you take the filter off there is some oil that runs out of the filter but it stays in the oil filter holder does not over flow. Instead of using the drain plug below the filter I just use a couple paper towels to pick up the run off. Its a little messy but works. It also allows me to wipe that entire area before installing new filter.
