Quick question to the guys with plastidipped wheels

Hey guys I was thinking about plasti dipping my wheels but was wondering if it would be better to take them off the rig first? If I left them on should I cover my brake pads and calipers or does it not matter? What do y'all recommend?

When I did my stock wheels, I left them on the truck and just covered the calipers and rotors with a plastic trash bag.

I have taken mine off the times that I have done it. But after the dip I then use spray paint and get the color or colors that I want. Have done three different colors but always come back to the Grey!

I took mine off before dipping them. Didn't feel like dealing with covering/taping things off

I left them on when I did mine. I did the spare off the vehicle. I felt it was far less work with the ones I did on the truck vs. the spare. Because the can sprays best in a vertical position, you are left picking up the tires up to apply the coat before setting it back down (Unless you have a good place to lean them against. Regardless, you don't need to put your rig on jacks or deal with a couple dozen lug nuts. (For those who don't have an air compressor)

Been almost a year I think since I did it, still holding up strong. Only thing that has really worn is the lugs

Did you end up dipping and painting the inside of the wheel too? Or just the outside?

took them off, you would probably want to put a LOT OF COATS. Makes it much easier to remove when its time.

The inside is dipped but not painted. Probably not the best dipping inside, I just wanted to get it black so the paint would stand out better. Depending on what wheel weight you use depends on dipping the inside.

If using sticky weights, (which is what I always ask for) I found out those weights come off easier because they are stuck to dip instead of wheel.

The paint on my stock 18s is flaking really bad, I think I'll try dipping them.

The inside is dipped but not painted. Probably not the best dipping inside, I just wanted to get it black so the paint would stand out better. Depending on what wheel weight you use depends on dipping the inside.

Gotcha. I was thinking about going the dipping then spray paint route to get the color I want just like you did. I might dip the inside just cause I don't want excess spray paint everywhere

I took them off. It wasn't that hard and I felt like it made the job easier.

Whatever you do make sure to do more coats than you think you need. Also the morning after I did it someone hit me and messed up the job so I have to redo it.

on your dura's, you will need to pull the valve stem and get all air out. This will let the wheel protector move to shove the playing cards or note cards between the wheel and tire so you don't have a lot of over spray, Works great! like [MENTION=122620]muscarellaw[/MENTION] said, use a lot of dip, I used 1 can per wheel.

What color are you going with?

I wish I used a can per wheel I'll probably put some extra layers on this weekend

Take the time and take them off. It is a lot easier and less messy. I personally have never had good luck with plastidip on anything other than emblems and maybe my grill. It just comes peels off to easy. JMHO

I've had mine on for almost a year, still looks almost brand new. Granted, I don't wheel. Did about 4 or 5 coats per wheel and did them while mounted with bags behind the wheels. Biggest thing is making sure the wheels are clean and doing a thin base coat

Only thing that has peeled is the overspray on the tires (that I was too dang lazy to remove 'cause it looked fine)

Sounds like results will vary, but imo its worth the $20 and hour of time to do so. Planning on replacing wheels next year hopefully with Stealth Custom 6 and TRD caps

What color are you going with?

Thanks for the tip! Ill prob jsut start with black and see what it looks like. If not that then ill go with a dark metallic grey. Like those grey bbs tundra wheels
