Quick question: what fluid in the transfer case

I'm servicing my wife's '97 4runner Limited w/ auto trans. Went to drain the t-case and what seems to be coming out is ATF - it's thin and doesn't smell like gear oil. Everything I read on spec says gear oil.

Which is it? My dealer doesn't know (surprise.)
