Just got my sliders! 3 days of waiting?! Damn Adam, bravo!
With 3 days of waiting time, competitive pricing, and awesome slider design, you cannot beat 4XInnovations. I highly recommend them!:clap2:

In my garage as of now: (They are made of DOM and have the kickout)

ESTIMATES: So I am getting estimates for welding.
One shop said it would take 5 hours and will be $110 an hour plus a $40 welding fee. (Yeah, go f/$& yourself.)
One shop said it would take 2-3 hours max and said they would take $200 cash for the weld job. Although, this shop said if they were to paint it, it would be $200 a slider. (He said a lot of paint will be used because of overspray.)
I have a friend with a tig and mig welder and will do it for $75. However, I am not sure of his welding experience. I have never seen his work. (He is more of a friend of a friend).

QUESTION #1: Any recommendations as to what a reasonable price would be?

I might also just bedline spray can my sliders.

QUESTION #2: Should i paint them BEFORE or AFTER they've been installed?

Paint the slider but not the legs. 200 seems reasonable to weld on sliders. but if your friend of a friend knows how to weld then i would go with the 75$ option. all as long as the welds penetrate then it'll be strong, it don't have to look pretty, and if a person knows how to tig weld(extremsly hard to get good at) then he must be pretty good at mig welding.

I would say go with your friend for $75...but that's just me. If he owns his own welder, he must somewhat know how to use it. I had some teenage kid custom make sliders and weld it on for me when I had my Nissan Titan. The welds didn't look pretty, but they held up well...even with hi-lift (truck weighed almost 6000 lbs).

As for paint, I agree with what T4r4life said. I painted my sliders once on the truck...and it was a PITA to get all the spots evenly.

i welded mine with a hobart 150, dropped the truck 3 feet off a boulder wheeling, landed directly on both sliders, bent the sliders, the mounting plates didnt even move. so it doesn't have to be a powerful welder as long as it penetrate it will be plenty strong.

Do NOT let "4 Wheel Parts" do the welding.
They told me it would be about $150, then charged me $400.
Did a fine job however was bait and switch.

As for the paint do it yourself , get some denatured alcohol and scrub the sliders well to remove the shipping grease, then sand them just scruff them up good, then go over them again with the denatured alcohol.
Use the Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance enamel
I think I used 3 cans of Primer and 3 cans of Black if I remember right to paint both sliders so that's about $40, denatured alcohol was about $5.

Put at least 3-4 very thin coats of primer, then 3-4 thin coats of Black.

Then buy some non skid tape and tape the tops I think that was about $10.

So for under $60 it looks good and probably last just as long as anything else you will find for 4 plus times the price.
except for one single chip on the drivers side caused by a rock mine still looks like the day I did them well over a year ago.

Buy a cheap welder on craigslist and do it yourself. It will cost the same and save you a boatload of money if you ever plan to make any more parts (bumpers are $$$$).

My sliders have three legs and I probably spent about 1 hour welding them up and another 2 hours measuring, cutting and scratching my head.

If you don't go that route, I wouldn't let someone charge you for more than 2 hours, and always check out the work before you pay.

Okay. So I am going to go with my friend for $75.
I am going to paint the sliders with spray can bed liner.
Here is what I will use. Please correct me if I need anything else:

2 cans of Bedliner paint
2 cans of primer
1 pack of 80 grit sand paper
1 bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol

I am going to take this job slow. I will paint and let it sit for a while. I might end up installing them next week but want to prep for the install.

I've rattle canned a bunch.

Sand then alcohol, when you start to prime do a 'flash' coat (super light) first. Sit 5 mins. Then do normal light coats every 10-15 after till covered. Its recommended to let the primer cure for 48 hrs then redo the same process for the liner. Should come out great.

My method, but essentially the same as yours:

1) Sand sliders with 80 grit sandpaper.
2) Wash with well water and dry completely.
3) Rub alcohol all over sliders with microfiber cloth.
4) Let alcohol dry completely.
5) Lightly coat sliders with primer. Let sit for 24hrs.
7) Coat sliders normally with primer. Let it sit for 24hrs.
8) Coat sliders with normal amount of bed liner. Let it sit for 24hrs.
9.) repeat step 8.
10) Weld sliders. Touch up weld spots with bedliner.

You doing need to wait 24 hrs between primers coats. Just do the flash them light coats every few minutes. You just want them to get tacky between each coat for good adhesion. Then the primer dries for 24-48 and then do the top coats the same way. It'll work well

80 grit is way too rough for that surface. Theres no need to go that rough because there is nothing to strip its already bare metal. You re just trying to scuff it up.I would go with something around the 400 grit range.

Yep no need for 24 hours between coats of primer, more like about 5 minutes tops for the first very thin flash coat, then maybe 10 - 15 minutes between the other 3 or so thin coats.
Use probably 320- 220 grit should be fine, and using the type of sandpaper that has the cloth backing works best, you can cut it into strips about 1" wide and really get everywhere like shining a shoe.
Alcohol the hell out of it when done, get all oil off including finger prints.

I have found that those trigger sprayers you attach to the top of spray cans works well and saves your finger.
I would let the final primer coat set for a couple hours if its warm like above 65 and its in the sun, probably over night if its cold.
Then repeat for the enamel coats.
Let final coat dry for about 24 hours

Thank you djtc. I would have probably figured that out while in the store but the guy at my other shop told me to use 80 grit. He was also a hillbilly and told me that 4XInnovations used oil to coat the sliders so they wouldnt rust. Is that true?

He also had oil on his hands from another truck and touched my sliders and then made that statement. I just looked away and smiled.

The temperature outside right now is 34 degrees.

I dont have those sliders but if they re pre built I wouldnt be surprised if they have been coated with sone kind of oilly substance.

Like the ither member said 320 would also be fine. The higher the grit the smoother and shinnier it will be.bring it up to 1500 , give it a rub with some buffing compound and you ll have polished sliders!

Most bare metal is shipped with a coating of oil to keep it from rusting.

Also he probably was talking about using an 80 grit grinding disk to get rid of welding spatter if its present. DEWALT DW8309 4-1/2" x 7/8" 80 Grit Zirconia Angle Grinder Flap Disc - Amazon.com

He told me to go get 80 grit hand sandpaper because its not that abrasive and i wont see any marks in the metal with 80 grit. He mentioned that with the 80 that it would be enough for the paint to adhere to the metal.

He told me $200 a slider for paint. $400 to paint $250 sliders. He's probably from Alabama.
