I know the takata issue is a dead horse around here, but the new recall announcements have me wondering this... I had my 2010 TE front passenger airbag replaced under recall last summer (my truck is in CO now but spent its life in FL before I bought it last spring). The language in Toyota's tech doc about the recall specifically says "Other airbags in the vehicles will not be affected by this announcement or subsequent Safety Recalls involving Toyota and Scion vehicles".... kinda strange, but that leads me to believe that all the other airbags in the vehicle are either not Takatas, or more likely, not the same type of degradation prone propellant. Anyone know the specs on the other airbags in the vehicle?

My Dealer friend tells me in January of 2016 it was widely announced that Nissan and Toyota dropped Takata as an airbag supplier after a similar move by Honda. Other Japanese automakers, including Mazda, Mitsubishi and Subaru said that they were considering phasing out Takata’s main airbag technology. The news reported that was 50% of the company's business which is what quickly lead them to seek bankruptcy protection I think. So I assume Toyota went with another supplier in early 2016 across the board...

That is not true. The recall will not show up for your vehicle until it is almost time for your airbag to be replaced, if it needs to be replaced.
2017 4Runners are included in the list of vehicles which have problem Takata air bags, and which will be recalled at some point in 2018.

Paragraph 43, which is on Page 17, says:
43.“Subject Vehicles” means those Toyota vehicles listed on Exhibit 9 that contain or contained Takata phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (“PSAN”) inflators in their driver or passenger front airbag that (i) have been recalled, or (ii) shall be recalled or contain a desiccant and that may be subject to future recall as referenced in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (“NHTSA”) Consent Orders dated May 18, 2015 and November 3, 2015, and amendments thereto, as indicated in Exhibit 10.
Toyota's vice president signed that settlement agreement in May 2017.
To sum it all up:
Toyota sold new 2017 4Runners with Takata air bags in them.
They knew the 2017's would be recalled at some point. Maybe the dealer told buyers, maybe not.
Right now, most Toyota dealers play stupid about this issue, and tell you everything is okay because your 2017 isn't on the recall list, and that you have nothing to worry about.
The 2017 4Runners will be on the recall list later this year, once Toyota officially adds them to that list.
Until then, 2017 4Runner owners are driving around with Takata airbags.

Cool set of info there... but its a Class Action lawsuit Hombre they are going to list anything and everything to cover all possibilities and allow owners to enter the suit for potential compensation.
I'm not saying they didn't continue down the line with the existing supply chain in 2016 when the other Japanese manufacturers were using alternatives but there would be a point ( VIN Specific ) where there was a full stop for sure and only Toyota would know that info.
If this dude signed off on that in May it would make sense that they already had a replacement in the supply chain and on the assembly line - they make a lot of vehicles and they cannot afford to turn off the line and wait. We'll see, my truck was built in June, I'll report back if I get a letter someday !
Yes, because I found this forum while searching the internet for information on the subject. I thought it would be helpful to provide clarity to the issue, since there seemed to be a great deal of confusion about why 2017's had not yet been recalled.
Your dealer isn't likely to tell you about the settlement and future recall because they probably don't know about it, and won't until Toyota issues the actual recall.
Anyone who didn't opt out of that class action by November of 2017, but who had a 2017 4Runner titled in their name by June 2017, is a party to the class and accepted the settlement terms. It was nice of Toyota to do this, but not tell anyone.

Seems like your passing more misinformation than information on this one... I highly doubt some guy that was doing a random search and came across this forum has more information on the subject than the forum members. Also, if this were "swept under the rug" and 2017 owners were lied to, I think it would be a MUCH bigger deal than what it is right now.
