What is the big boxy thing mounted on the side of the tcase? (To the right of the skid plate) held on by 2x 17mm bolts. Almost seems like some sort of counter balance or something..

You guessed correctly--please collect your 500 silver dollars(not from me).
I forget what Toyota calls it, but it's a vibration-damping device for the driveline.

Haha, thanks man! Was removing the small transfercase skid plate to put on aftermarket skids and wanted to make sure I wasn’t supposed to remove that as well. Didn’t think so.

I dont know if Toyota has a special name for them. But they are called Tuned Mass Dampers.

They are actually really cool. You can have a small mass (the damper) attached to a larger mass (the case) that will can cancel out a target vibrational frequency.
