Quiet Please V8 vs. V6

RL,
Like you said, it is all relative to where you've come from. My V6 T4R is quieter than any other competitor's V6 I've owned. I think the V8 to V6 comparison also relates to the trim level (Ltd vs SR5.)

I also agree with you about the stealth comments.

Yeah, my V6 has the infamous lifter tick. That's ok though, I happen to love the new engine design. I like hearing the engine rev up with the fan clutch engaging. It results in an indescribable yet satisfying growl when you punch it. I'm use to hearing the engines in every vehicle I've driven so I guess I unknowingly tune it out.

I've driven my friend's V8 and was surprised by the smoothness and quietness compared to my half-dozen. Yet the V6 is aluminum, hence perhaps the noise is not as well insulated.

Not this again... Always V8 vs V6... I didn't buy it for sneaking up on people, and standing outside the vehicle it's much quieter than any other vehicle I have owned. Inside, I can't even tell the engine is running unless I step on the gas.

A belt driven timed engine will always be quieter than a chain driven timed engine. An iron block will almost always be quieter than an aluminum block. The V6 was not designed to be a luxury engine. It was designed for minimal weight, minimal emissions (less than 150 lbs smog forming emissions per year), and maximum power/torque.

I'm happy with my engine!

Compared to my 1985 VW Golf, the silence in my 4Runner is deafening. Even my mother, who has severe hearing loss, tells me she can hear the different between the noise levels in the two vehicles.

I have to wonder if the V6 loaner the original poster used was a good indicator of how a new V6 performs or is used/abused loaner.

The V6 loaner was new, my V8 has 80,000 miles.

The only aspect of the V6 that makes me favor it over the V8 is that it has a timing chain. I wonder what a timing belt replacement will cost me? I guess I will find out in 70,000 miles. I currently have 19,975 miles on my 06.

Is the V-8 a non-interference engine?

so toyota went to an interference engine in the 4th gen? my third is non interference so if the t-belt brakes, i just can start it but no damage!

reason 37 i dont like the new runners (if its true)

EDIT:
talk to 3 diff techs at diff dealer and they said both the V6 and V8 were interference motors.

just another reason for them to make more money and not to be able to stretch the belts out!! each of them said they were told that it helps with emissions(spell) being interference. seems like crap to me but 3 diff ones said that

I think they had to do it because of the variable valve timing. Just change the belt at 90,000 miles. Do the water pump at the same time.

Driving the V6 seemed like it had more pep, as it was eager to jump up in RPM and go. Driving the V8 is more relaxed. With the V8 I tend to accelerate onto the freeway at 2,000 RPM, exceeding the speed of everyone around me. Calmly motoring with torque. Quite a contrast to the reliance on the higher RPM horsepower of the V6.

It seems that many here are sensitive about their choice of engines. My comments are about the differences, and my preferences.

I remember driving a rental V6 4X2 4Runner for about a thousand miles before getting my V8 4X4. I drove all thru the Ozarks on the twisty blacktop roads and some of the Forest Service roads. Driving the V6 was quite a hoot and the quick revving engine was so eager to please.

In contrast, driving the V8 on the same Ozark roads is an exercise in finesse. The best way is to relate it to motorcycling, in that the difference between the two engines is similar to riding a 600cc sportbike and my BMW 1100 GS. Both are great fun, just a lot different.

Both are very good engines. I would not hesitate to get either one. Hell, with the rebates a few months ago (when fuel prices were high), both choices costed pretty much the same!:)

When test driving the V8 I noticed it was much smoother and quietier (not to mention hp & tq.). I do like both engines and would not hesitate to buy either one .

All in what you need or want.

Seems like the people that most dread this topic coming up again are the ones with the V6... :p

I dread these kind of thread too...and i own a V8...well, a different V8, but a V8 nonetheless!:D I don't like these kind of threads because it creates division in the forum...you put a barrier between the V6 and V8 owners for no reason since both sides are 4runner owners. The same thing occurs on Mercedes G forums...one group is old G owners and is still piss that Mercedes is now importing G's for half the price ($70K vs. $140K before 2002) while the other group bought it after 2002.

YOU GUYS ALL OWN A 4RUNNER.

V6 vs. V8

So much discussion about engine choices all the time.

I extensively test drove both V6 and V8 engines when purchasing. I had no issue with either choice. Yes, the V8 is quieter and imparts very slight impact on MPG.

My personal choices had to do with the fact that I tow a camper and appreciate the extra power as well as the tranny cooler already part of theV8 package. I also liked the fact that the V8 (like the GX470) is always in 4WD. The minimal difference in price at he time was also a huge factor.

BUT.......if only the V6 was offered inthe 4Runner it would still have been my choice - even over competitor's V8 offerings.

There is so much more to the vehicle than the engine. Let's be happy that Toyota offers the buyer choices.

Perhaps we can get back to arguing leather vs. cloth or silver vs. white color :)
