Quistion on a toytec lift

I'm not sure what you mean. No I think. Struts = shock & coil. But yes with this kit you are replacing half of a strut set up. This kit is the coils only, not the shocks. You will have to take out your old shocks and replace them with the OME ones, or a similar length different brand like Bilsteins. And FYI, you should replace your stock shocks with new longer length shocks that will fit the OME coils. Stock shocks DO NOT fit OME coils. They are not long enough because OME provides a lift. So if you are looking for a suspension lift, you have to go all the way. New coils & shocks, so yeah a new strut set up. If you are just looking for new replacement suspension (no lift) for your stock set up, OME is not what you are looking for. Call Doug at ToyTec and he'll help you out. I believe it's option 2, "You have not yet placed an order and have a question", for when you call.
Since I just did this 2 weeks ago, let me know if you have any questions if you do not want to go straight to ToyTec.

That's what i thought, i read on OEM's website that OEM struts required but it doesn't say that on yotatec's discribtion
Anyway .. i want to lift my truck more than an inch and less than 3 with a minimum cost.
I dont off road i just need it for the looks and i have a pretty bad rub after installing wheel spacers.
Any other product you recommend?
What about a daystar Comfort Ride kit?

Any suspension lift is going to do the same thing as the OME lift will. If you are not going to do any offroading you will be just fine with that lift. Where people run into problems is over-extending their shocks when flexing or offroading. For just looks and daily driving this lift will be fine on stock shocks. I have been running the exact lift for about 9 months now on my stock shocks with no problems at all.

Yes you can put OME coils over you stock shocks, but why would you? You entirely run the risk of doing permenent damage to your stock shocks and then you'll have to replace them anyway. I was advised by knowledgeable suspension mechanics that they have seen people do this coil swap out, and even if they don't off road, the stock shocks seperated causing lots of damage. Because of the 3" length difference, the stock shocks are not designed to go that length, and will pull apart. All it takes is one pot hole, one branch in the road, one accidently driven off curb.
Do what you want to your 4Runner, but to me the cost of buying 4 shocks over waiting for damage to occur just doesn't make sence. And because I love 4Runners and their reputation, I'd never want to see this happen. To me, do it right or don't do it at all. If you want a lift JUST for looks, go with the cornfed/daystar/roger brown whatever spacer lift. As trd-4Runnin says, the OME coil swap out will work, and I'm happy it's working for him and he's happy with it. But that's not they way the designers meant for the suspension to be used. Why stress parts out the wrong way? Do your own research that way you'll be ok with whatever you break down the road. The OME system was designed for off road use. Again, I think the spacer lift is what you are looking for. It's the cheapest way to get higher, & the easiest to put in and take out.

Flexing out the suspension on a completely stock 4Runner will allow the shock to travel more than 3" safely so how is a 3" lift ran strictly on road going to cause a shock to seperate? If he is going to go offroad and be constantly flexing and compressing the suspension, then I agree that the stock shocks will not do, but for on-road driving he is not going to cause any permanent damage.

And you are recommending spacers to him, yet they do the same thing in terms of extending the shock 3". So in reality, you are recommending he spend less to get a arguably harsher ride, cheaper-quality lift, and do the same so-called "permanent damage" to his shocks?

To the OP, write Doug at Toytec an email and let him know what you are wanting out of a lift and how you plan to use your truck and see what he recommends you. He is a great help.

I think i will trd_4runnin.
I didn't listen to you when you recommended the hub centric wheel spacers and got the crappy lug centric ones and now its vibrating in high speeds and when i apply the brakes in high speeds too.
now i have to throw these away and get the spiderTrax ones. (sent you a pm aaages ago about your wheel spacers)
I think this time i will take your word on this kit :D
Can i skip on the dif drop?
And how will a 3" look with a 265/75/16 as they are still new and i cant change them now.
If you guys know another lower lift than a 3" let me know.
trd_4runnin can you please post some pics of your truck and what tire size you runnin?

I personally wouldn't skip on the diff drop kit. For me the diff drop kit only made the total price about $20 more and for that I'll take the piece of mind. I think it will look fine with the 265/75s. I currently run the stock 265/70s and while I really want to move up to 285s, it doesn't look horrible in my opinion for the time being.

Oh, and sorry about not replying to the PM I never even realized I had it until you just told me. This site needs a software update badly.

Just my .02 , although I would agree that having CO's are the best way to go from my guess and what I have read ( I don't have them , yet ) but as far as spacers go , there are plenty of people here who off road (mild stuff where you just need extra clearance)
I would not be afraid to do the off roading I do with a small spacer lift like a 2/1 or 2/2. All i need is some extra belly clearance , but I WOULD be a little concerned about the flex and over extension of shocks to the point I would keep an I eye on it.

If I did not have Xreas I would skid the spacers and go with OME , Icon , Toytec , ect . I like the adjustable ride height packages so you can fine tune your lift to your liking.

I've read here that the diff. drop is not needed , but I personally have no knowledge , just what I've read.

Just throwing ideas out there . For me my truck is my DD , so a compromise between form , ability of the truck and practical function , decent ride , reliability is important since I drive 25k per year. I have larger AT tires on and except for some good scrapes under the belly it has taken me everywhere off road I have needed it to.

Top plate spacers exist, they would work just as well. Do your research knowing whatever you pick, if you don't do it right chit happens. Your going to change your ride quality, the stress on certain parts of your vehicle, and how it handles. I went with a full OME set up because I do off road, I didn't want much change in my ride quaility, and finally the evidence that done right the OME lift works the best out there on a 4Runner with out having to spend thousands. This link has great information already gathered for you.

Yes Please call Doug at ToyTec. That's what I reccomended from the get go since he's the professional. He'll better explain about the stock shocks with the OME coils. And since you are not outfitting your 4Runner for off road ability, I'm sure you'll be able to get by just fine like trd has with his. In these parts of N.CA. where we live within an hour of the Rubicon, it's what we call a Mall Crawler! I agree with him about the diff drop= peace of mind. So easy part done, and the fun begins! Make sure to post pics one day. Oh and I saw some spidertrax on ebay. Don't forget to have your 4Runner realigned at a good shop afterwards. Good luck!

Since you ditched your Xreas , what do you think of the ride quality with the OME ? Handle better worse , ride better/worse ?

How many miles on your 4R ?

Honestly, I like it better. All thumbs up & I'll never go back to stock.

See, part of this issue was I never knew I had X-REAS. The only time I've been under Ruffian was to change the oil, and look at a few specific parts. Since I was not told by the dealer that system was there, I never bothered to look for it. No, it was not listed on the invoice sticker, and you know how they like to push every attribute.

I did notice on the deeply rutted or rocky roads, the Jeepers wondered how I could go faster than 10 mph, and how could I stand the harsh ride. I told them the ride was great, and I didn't notice the bumps. They figured I was nuts, but I kept telling them, this is ONE of the areas where Toyota is far superior to Jeep. (Our club has a bit of a Jeep vs. Toyota competition) They again figured I was nuts. The didn't even understand why I didn't want to air down. I told them I noticed no change from airing down to riding with full pressure. They called me nuts. lol The only time I aired down was for rock crawling where I had to go slow to protect the under carriage and where I needed every bit of tread path to grip.

What I notice now is I have great handling. I do not notice any body sway, or that weird delayed whiplash feeling. I've been in lots of lifted vehicles...mall crawlers, rock crawlers, Jeeps etc. I have not noticed anything I dislike. I do feel maybe about a 5% change in top heavyness. I can still take tight corners, but I back off the throttle instead of pushing through it. That may change as I get used to it. So I'd say it handles better (could be due to maybe an alignment was needed), ride is a bit firmer but not harsh, jittery or slightly irritating. I like having my nose up and the level ride. Just rolled 67,000. I don't think I'll miss X-REAS at all, I didn't even want it, and can't wait to sell it.

After I get some armour, I'll report back how she handles off road. Right now on road, oh I love what my Toyota does for me!:biggrin2:

Sounds great . Thats pretty low miles for that year. My 06 already has 53k on it. Mainly because I love driving this thing so much , both on road and off. You truck looks real clean also.

Thank you. When I bought her Dec. 07, she had 52K on her, so in 11 months, I think I've done a good job! I love my 4Runner, and the only thing I'm disappointed in is the seat. I had to get a lumbar support pillow. Actually there are other things, but with some welding, they will be stronger!
I actully had a lot of pin stripes from roading, but nothing a buff job couldn't fix. Like most everyone else who posts here, I really love my truck!
