Has anyone else seen this? It just premiered on Discovery a couple days ago. Honestly its pretty heartbreaking, but its something everyone on this planet really needs to see:

Here's an extended sneak peak:

It makes me want to recycle, but then I remember the recycling bin is farther away than the trash can. But in all seriousness I couldn't finish it, it makes me mad at society (myself included) for pushing these animals out of their habitats. At the rate we are going our grandchildren might not get to see half of the animals we do today, a truly saddening thought.

I watched it. Some of it is true, some of it is not. The story is told specifically to draw out your emotions. If you will remember this one thing though you will see it in a different light: Long before man even existed, plants and animals evolved, lived and became extinct on their own. Man is just another link in the chain.

Not only that, but this planet will be just fine in a blink of an eye once we're gone. No matter how much we f*ck this planet up. The only ones we're truly f*cking is ourselves.

The difference being, man is a sentient link. Yes, extinctions will happen. But I think we have a responsibility to ensure that we're not causing more than we absolutely need to. I think we as a race can definitely do better in that regard.

Some of man lol...

I saw it. Its something everyone needs to be aware of and consider. If the show didn't touch you in some sort of way to encourage you to become better at doing your part to stop the escalating demise of the world, then I say, you have to ask yourself whats important to you and your family.

1engineer it seems like you think man isn't the biggest contributor to the worlds downward spiral. I also think your statement is shit. Animals never went extinct on there own. If you watched the show then you'd know there have been five mass extinctions, none were the animals fault. Yes they lived and adapted on their own but they did not go extinct on their own.

Anyone who supports the show and the message they are trying to get out please share it. Make people around you more aware. Share ways to make things better. Vote for green candidates in your area. Do whatever you can to slow the deterioration of our world. Small things combined equal big things over time. Like the show said, this is the last generation that can do something about it. Future generations are the ones that will suffer.

Animals have gone extinct on their own and it's summarized in Darwin's work. The superior will eventually win out. Does this mean that I hate all animals and I am the husband of Cruella Deville? Nope. I just realize that at some point there are species of animals that will go extinct no matter what we do.

I do believe in conservation and I also believe that if there is an efficient green option that we should explore it. By all means we should support the efforts of recycling or reusing natural resources. But to make an omelet a few eggs need to be broken and to gain the efficiency in some of the green technology our reliance on oil and other dirty fuels will have to remain for a few more decades.

I also believe that while the population of the earth grows the amount of "nature" will decrease as bigger populations need more space. They also grow the opportunity for cures to rare diseases, forwarding of technology and human development, continued cultural development, and an opportunity for everyone to experience baby poop diapers.

The issues I have with PETA and the Sierra Club is that they are in essence controlling population growth. In other words they don't believe some people have the right to breed and that animals are superior companions to other human beings. What they don't realize is that they should just go collectively drink some kool-aid in the forest and the world will be a better place.

Freedom is a superior product to regulated slavery. Just my .02.

Lol I'm not even going to debate you on the subject. Now if you go out and do a bit of research that does not include commercials and you make factual informed statements based on reality instead of passion then I will gladly listen.
Hey, personally I care about life and I know that man has messed up a lot. My point is that show is designed to elicit passion more than present facts in a nonbiased way. It's on TV. If it's on TV then it's primary mission is to sell ad space. Read published works. Read textbooks. Watch TV for entertainment.

1engineer I agree with you that the show did plucks on the emotional strings of the heart and that is what 80% of the show was produced to do, but the other 20% did state some scientific facts that shouldnt be ignored. Instead of getting into a pissing match of quickly stated google facts lets just agree to spread the word and make those of us around us more aware of what could be done to better the situation.
Kryptoroxx I like your post. But the last paragraph is debatable, population control needs to be considered all around. Think that one day, on this planet, there will not be any nature, itll all be inhabited by man with nothing but concrete and steel. But thats not the point of this thread, make another thread if this needs to be discussed.

4gin007 The last paragraph was a little far fetched for most of the supporters of those two groups. If you doubt that there are people like that though.....

I also highly doubt that this planet could turn into all concrete and steel. There's no possible way the population density would reach that without completely obliterating itself in war.....and then we'd be back to nature again. The planet reclaims itself at an alarming pace. As an example I live out in the desert on a military base. Now we have thousands of acres to train on and there are of course maps to all of these training areas. I could tell you how much those maps are off from being stationed here for 5 years but there are a lot of places that go unused for months or even a year at a time due to different mitigating circumstances. Those roads are erased within weeks if you let the desert have her way and if you give it a year structures can disappear. The forest is just as aggressive. I think the plains might be a little slower but still. The marks of man can be erased very quickly.

Good points so far. I do agree with 1engineer, it was produced to play our emotions and was obviously successful, but that is what is needed these days to draw peoples' attention to important topics outside of their daily sphere of influence.

There were a couple things in the film I don't entirely agree with. First, we have no idea how many species inhabit this planet, and we discover quite a few every year. We also have not been taking records NEARLY long enough to state that species are going extinct 1,000 times faster than normal, or that human industry is the biggest or only factor pushing current climate change. However, all we can really do is hope that their estimates are off in our favor. We really cannot conclusively say how bad or good the situation is. And if we do have the power to stabilize the climate change as much as possible, wouldn't we want to do that? We are uniquely adapted to current climate conditions and it would be in exactly nobody's favor to accelerate that change to less hospitable conditions.

There may have been a few alarmist statements made, but for those who don't think the situation is as urgent as those who produced this film, I ask; why not try to err on the side of caution whenever possible? Reckless and unsustainable growth is harmful to both our species and all others around us regardless of how you view the topic. With so many animal populations in severe decline, we need to be more proactive to safeguard the biodiversity we currently have.

Killing 70 million sharks for just their fins each year is obscene and disgusting no matter how you slice it. Cutting their fins off and letting them drown in a slow death is as cruel as anything I've seen. Killing hundreds of thousands of elephants for their ivory is insane and incredibly cruel. Going after manta rays despite their lack of useful meat, decimating their populations because of their slow reproduction rate is just another example of how irresponsible and ignorant we can be. The illegal exotic species market is awful. I've experienced a lot of animals dying, most of them needlessly, and it sucks every time. Its just not right. Respectfully killing for food and to use every part of the animal you can is one thing. Indiscriminate killing and industrial scale slaughter is another, and if you see it in person and are not at least privately horrified then you have no soul.

I think the film draws much needed attention to certain parts of our world that a lot of people are willfully ignorant of. When they see the truth it can cause positive change for us to simply be more responsible people. I don't think its a stretch to say that most human industry is excessively wasteful simply because we can get away with it. When we are removed from the direct consequences of our actions, our lifestyle seems to be less harmful than it actually is. Not to mention that the solution is amazingly simple- if we just ease or eliminate destructive pressure on animal populations and environments, the wildlife will rebound and take care of itself. ALL we have to do is stop being so destructive.

Slightly on topic, I highly recommend watching the Netflix original documentary Virunga (2014). It was shot 2013-2014, very current.

i think we have a serious population issue and people should be selected breeders. i get very upset when i see families of more than 2 children.
