Sorry to post this here but this made me so upset that I'm literally shaking, and I know that we have a diverse group of people here that would feel the same anger as I do. They played this on the public radio?!

Earlier last week, HOT97 morning show staffs (Miss Jones) aired a song based on the Tsunami, below are the lyrics. It's extremely racist, and so unacceptable. Please forward this and boycott HOT97 and their sponsors until Miss Jones and her entire staff's off the air.

This is jacked up, in so many ways. It's worth noting that one of that show's other hosts, Miss Info, is Asian American. Apparently, she voiced her objections to the skit and got into a heated on-air argument with Miss Jones about it.

Oh yeah, note that on the clip, they proclaim that the Tsunami Song was "brought to us by" Sprint. What's that now? Here's a list of Hot 97's sponsors:

I'm sure they'd love to hear about the kind of quality programming their money is sponsoring.

Not only is that racist, it's just plain bad taste. Futhermore, they couldn't even get their bigotry correct. Indonesians are not Chinese. I believe there were very few Chinese in the disaster.
 
wow....that was pretty bad. i don't care if you're white, black, yellow, blue, pink, or orange. that is really uncalled for. i can't believe miss jones was defending this on the radio. is she really that retarded to think maybe....just MAYBE this might offend some people? wow....this is not even a race issue. this is a issue of people being inhumane. how would Miss Jones like it if Radio India brodcasted a song making fun of the 9/11 attacks? Miss Jones should never ever speak in public again.
 
What kind of song is this? Hip/Hop, Rap, Rock, etc.?? Who is the artist? I guess I don't understand the context of this song being presented? Our culture is getting so course in many ways. I wonder what the radio station thought they were accomplishing with airing such a unkind song? If it was to offend they did a great job.
 
i agree that this is not a race issue. it's just a group of people being retarded and insensitive to other's feelings by thinking this is funny. it's even more ironic that this is happening in a city where 9/11 happened. why don't they make fun of that too? i hope they lose their sponsors and their jobs.

Yes, it is racist, yes, it is ignorant, but our culture supports and rewards such idiocy. Why should Howard Stern make millions being the same insenitive dolt? To mangle George Orwell's Animal Farm, he insults everyone equally, some more equal than others. Our culture rewards Simon Cowell's smarmy insults on Amerian Idol that would otherwise get his ass stomped into the ground in a biker bar; we cheer trash talking, we laugh and pump our fists in the air when one sports dolt makes some tasteless remark about another sports dolt.

So it certainly does not surprise me to see some of this garbage on the air. It caters to the young male crowd; you know the ones wearing the Megadeath t-shirts, baseball cap on backwards, mullet haircut, proud to being close to a high school GED in 2 more years, yes, those guys who make Beavisand Butthead look like Rhodes Scholars would just juck it up, celebrating their own igorance and stupidity.

Speaking of ignorance, stupidity, and racists, do you think you would find Jesse Jackson going there to demonstrate against this????? Or does he only rant and rave against injustice if there was a TV camera on him.....

Pitbull, this was sung by the the radio show hosts, namely Miss Jones and a couple other guys, live, while another co-host Miss Info (who is Asian) protested and was confronted by the others for not 'going-along' with the program. The stupidity of the song plus the fact that none of them can even caryy a note makes this even more ridiculous.

that is just not enough. if randy moss get sa $10,000 fine for PRETENDING to moon fans, then this should get a $100,000 fine that will go to the tsunami relief. i heard on the radio that the "substantial donation" that they are putting together consists of one weeks pay from each employee.
 
I like that idea.

Radio show to be indefinitely suspended and employees who were in on it to be without pay until they spend 1 month in Indonesia digging trenches to bury bodies, feeding the homeless, pulling corpses out of the muck, and helping grieving families ID their loved ones.

It's peculiar to see you express your shock and horror over the terrible insensitivity towards the tsunami victims (not sure race had much to do with it by the way) and then go on to poke fun at (or even blame) another group of individuals whom by all accounts had little if anything to do with the matter at hand. :(

If we accept your assertion, then Miss Jones' show is in even more trouble than we first assumed. Not only do they air jokes that almost nobody finds humorous but moreover they cater to a market that would not listen to their show in any case. Or does the Miss Jones show frequently blend in a bit of Megadeath to their fresh Hip Hop mix? Perhaps I'm just stereotyping or being racist! :D

OK, the hip hop crowd--ironically the majority of CD sales are to white middle class young males, young males with Raider jackets, pants hanging down their butt cracks showing off their boxers, listening to hip hop lyrics about killing cops and slapping 'hos, driving around their lowered Hondas, wearing big (fake) gold Mercedes emblems around their necks, and just playing wannabe gangbangers flashing hand signs, every other word out of their mouths starts with an F or an N...

is that the audience for Hop97?

or am I generalizing?

I think what olliebear said was stereotyping. But what Miss Jones aired was Racist and Inhumane. To me those are two completely different issues which should not even be compared in any way, especially in the amount of pain caused. She is also PAID to be a public spokesperson which is fiduciary in nature and she completely forgot that.

If you don't think what they aired was racist then try calling the next chinese person you see a chink or a chinaman and see how they respond. why did they use the word 'African' instead of the 'N' word in the song, since they used Chink for Chinese? because the show hosts themselves are black. they must've forgotten that just a few decades ago their ancestors had to fight against mindless bigots just like themselves so they could be where they are today.

poking fun is one thing, but pouring salt in the wounds of 200,000 dead people and their families is another. how did you all feel when the news aired iraqis cheering after the trade centers went down? what about a song written just to poke fun of 9-11? wonder why radio stations here never did a song like that... think!!

that crowd would probably take your descriptions as a compliment...

but you're right. the distinction lies in the difference of making fun of someone's personal taste, and making fun of someone whose life was just destroyed and their loved ones dead. if anyone has a problem distinguishing the two they'd better check themselves into an institution where they can't hurt themselves or anyone else.

Statement from WQHT-FM, HOT 97

New York City - Miss Jones and the HOT 97 Morning team have been indefinitely suspended for the airing of a song that made light of a catastrophic event, as well as comments made at the time the song was aired.

Earlier this week, Miss Jones said on the air "I apologize to all who have been offended by my poor decision to go along with playing that insulting (to say the least) Tsunami song. I should have known better and I didn't. So I'm sorry and hopefully we can move forward from this, or I can move forward from this being a better hostess, because I am better than that, and I know better than that -- and you deserve better radio than that."

While Miss Jones has apologized on the air, in the media and on the HOT 97 website, station management felt that stronger action was necessary to demonstrate the severity of the situation.

Emmis Radio and HOT 97 will not tolerate such derogatory and racially insensitive content. This incident in no way reflects the spirit of HOT 97. The station has a long-time and well-known reputation for community involvement and support.

Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said, "What happened is morally and socially indefensible. All involved, myself included, are ashamed and deeply sorry. I know the members of the morning show are truly contrite. They know their actions here are inexcusable."

We would like to clarify that no company advertising on our station had any connection to the Tsunami Song and no company advertising on our station endorsed or sponsored the offensive material aired on the "Miss Jones in the Morning" show. We apologize for any misunderstanding that may have caused listeners to believe that anyone, other than the morning show staff, was responsible for the material that should not have been aired.
