Rack and Pinion leak

So, i was changing the motor oil and notice that the rack and pinion black boot on both side are leaking. Not leaving stains on the floor but are darkening the boot. There is no play on the steering wheel. Is there a way to fix the leak or do i have to replace the whole rack? I have a 99 4runner 2wd with 156k miles.

I know there are companies that sell Seal replacement kits for steering racks but not sure if they have any for ours. I can tell you that I just got a remanufactured rack with inner tie rod ends from Toyotasteering.com and it was $275 with a $125 core charge. Take in consideration the inner TRE's from Toyota are $130 a piece and you have a good deal.

That's what i was afraid of. That price isn't that bad. I found a remanufactured rack on ebay for $175 and a $40 core charge with lifetime warranty. I looked for it today and it's no longer available. DAMN! Well, thanks Pikeman for the website. I might have to bite the bullet and order it from there.

I remember trying to find seals for my Tacoma with no luck, I ended up having to buy a new rack. I wish I knew about the site Pikeman posted! I paid close to $400 for mine!

I can absolutely guarantee you that the $275 rack did NOT come with $260 worth of Toyota OEM inner tie rods...for that price you got Chinese tie rods!:bash:

So, i received the rack and pinion i ordered from ebay. I payed $175 and will get back $45 back for core charge. The seller has 100% positive feedback so i decided to give it a shot. Does anybody have a step by step instructions to replace the rack and pinion? I would like to give a go and try to replace it myself.

It's pretty straight forward, the lines to and from the pump are a PITA to get to, unbolt the rack and pull it back a little to get to the lines...have fun!

Got a call from my dealer, telling me my rack-and-pinion is leaking, quoting me around $900 :AK47::AK47:

I had a slight leak in mine a while back. I ran some AutoRx in the rack for a little while, then changed it out. This was a couple years ago and I'm still sitting at full.

It may not be for everyone, but for those that may not have the cash.

Mine was leaking where the input shaft from the steering column comes from. Ran some power steering stop leak and that worked for a while. Then it came back and I bit the bullet. Found a re manufactured rack on Ebay with OEM Toyota parts for 350ish after shipping.

Problem is getting your high pressure line to work again after you remove it... and hope it doesn't leak. I just got it done when I got all my body work done. Ended up having to pay for a used taco high pressure line because mine wasn't salvageable.

Have fun! It sucks any way you slice it.
