Rack help

Hi all ... just got my first 4Runner today! I am anxious to get it fitted with some essential trimmings ... namely, my fishing rack

I have Yakima towers, crossbars (48"?), and the small ski rack (fits 4 fishing poles for surf fishing) from the Subaru Forester I just traded in.

First question ... is there anything I can reuse? I'm thinking only the ski rack, so I'll save the other towers and crossbar for my wifes Forester.

So, what's the best plan here? What Yakima setup have you all done? I will mostly use it for carrying the fishing gear (ski rack), but will occasionally use my Yakima hard shell cargo box for vacations.

I'm not sure how many options there are, and what looks best ... the Yakima site confuses me ... I think it's intentional

I don't think they make a base system that fits my factory rails for a 2006

Wow ... these sort of "safari look" carriers seem to be pretty popular, based on this and other threads. My brother has one on his Jeep too.

However, I'm just looking to attach my round Yakima cross-bars to the existing factory rails. Once my crossbars are attached I will be able to attach either my hard shell Yakima carrier or my ski rack.

After digging a little deeper, these seem to be able to fit a variety of factory rails:

But now you guys got me thinking about this other type of carrier. Now, maybe that would work so long as I could attach my ski rack to this type of "basket" cargo rack

I picked up the RailGrab kit today ... Took one out and checked the fit ... it looks like the small claws are just a wee too small, so I'll substitute the larger ones included in the kit.

Don't use the RailGrab kit. The Control Towers snap and lock down into the tracks that the factory crossbars ride in. Much cleaner look, very easy to move forward and backwards on the vehicle if needed. Just make sure you get the SKS lock cores for the towers, so no one can just unsnap them. Just my .02

Thanks for the tip. I had already gotten the railgrab kit and it's looking good. I used a 48" crossbar that I had, rather than the recommended 58" ... it looks good because the crossbar extend only one inch past the rails on each side, rather than 6 inches. I had towers on the previous setup on y Forester and I didn't like them as much ... but thanks anyway!
