So, having my 4Runner for several weeks now, I finally decided to hardwire my radar detector.
I have a Valentine One, and had it hardwired in my previous vehicle, so it had to be done again. I sold my other car, and the hardwire kit with it. So i had to work from scratch.
I did some digging through threads and never really got an answer in which I wanted answered. I wanted to power it near the Rear View Mirror. I pulled up the wiring schematics and got to work.
Pulled off the map light/Sunroof control. For me, I had the Sunroof/Map light plug and a small 6 wire(only 3 wired) blue plug tucked behind the headliner. I dug for what it could have been.. and never really figured it out. Could be for a powered mirror, maybe Homelink? I dunno, I dont have either.
So I used the Map light harness to get my power and ground. I used the outside wires. Red is 12V and White-black is ground. These are the furthest out wires on the plug.
I used an inline fuse for the 12v to give me some protection(just in case.. the red wire is fused at the fuse panel anyway).
Hooked everything up,powered up the unit and it works. It will stay on for a couple minutes upon key removal, so no biggy for battery drain.
I would post pictures of everything, but honestly looks like crap right now( I hurried the wiring because of my roadtrip today.. so I am going to clean it up later this weekend)
The main reason I did this way of hardwire is that I did not want to run the wire down the A-Pillar to the fuse box and mess with all that there. Once I source some buttons, I am going to wire a remote mute switch, but not until then.
I am happy, it works, looks clean... and takes 20 min if you have everything ready.
