So my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore has a metric shit-ton of radiant barrier 500Sq/Ft rolls (1-sided foil backing on Kraftpaper) for $10 each. (usually starts at like $60 each)
I bought 3 rolls (1500 Sq/Ft), and may buy a lot more, just to have on hand, because why not?
I've been planning to add some to my attic rafters for a while now and with this pricing, that timetable just got pushed up.
I've done some research and found that it's best to install the RB on the bottom of the attic rafters with the shiny side down. Leave an air gap between the RB and the actual roof, Radiant insulation versus conduction insulation, etc, etc.
However, my attic is weird, and while part of it leads to the roof directly, a lot of it actually butts up sideways to 2 bedrooms and a hallway with vaulted ceilings. I'd like to install the radiant barrier on these walls as well, to contain the attic heat. The attic side of the walls are just studs with insulation in between.
So question: on the interior attic walls, which way should the RB face, shiny side in or out?
For the attic ceiling, I'm trying to keep the heat out, and for the walls, I'm trying to keep the heat in (or rather, out of the rest of the house).
The same question goes for a crawlspace on my first floor. 2 walls are exterior, and the rest (and roof of the crawlspace) are interior. All open to the studs, with insulation.
