Radiator fan wont shut off

Hey guys,

I have a 1990 toyota 4runner, v6, 3VZE, 4x4.

Recently the radiator fan has been turning on and wont shut off. Im not driving the car hard, actually, im taking it pretty easy as I cant afford the gas for it. HAHA

When i park the car, I can hear the fan on and can clearly see it running. The fan will remain on for hours on end. I parked it at my school and came back four hours later, and the fan was still on.. luckily it didnt waist all of my battery. The only way that ive noticed to turn it off, is to unhook the battery and let it sit until i go to drive it.

Now i know its not good to do that, but id rather have an unhooked battery then a dead one..

Ive recently replaced the engine oil, but not the trans oil, and the radiator fluid has only been in the car for about a year now.

So any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this issue?

It would be greatly appreciated.

I'll bump this 4ya. I'm sure some of the 2nd gen guys will help out.

I'd start by checking the fan relay. It should be under the hood. Next time it stays on, find the relay and give it a tap.

The fans got a coolant switch that turns it on and off when the engine coolant gets hot enuf. Thats usually the problem in a case like this. Trace the fan wires back- one should go to a sensor in the engine block, which would be the switch. Usually you can unthread it with a deep socket, then replace to fix the problem.
Other scenario - the wire from the fan to the coolant sensor is grounded somewhere before the sensor. But if this was the case, fan would run as soon as you turned the key with vehicle stone cold. If it only starts to run after engine warms up, its the coolant sensor.

Ths engine fan on a V6 is a clutch fan!...Unless your engines spinning...ain't no way the engine fan gonna turn. The fan you hear running has to be the fan for the ac condenser....it should be visible the the grill...for now just unplug the fan...could be a relay, shorted wiring...etc...possiblities are a lot.

Well, ive heard of people replacing their fan with an electric one, so i figured this had one.. but your right, its the one visible through the grill thats running..

The weird thing about it is, my AC doesnt work, and hasnt since i got it..

The second thing is that the fan has never done this, and has only done it a couple times recently, since first posting this, it has stopped....
