Just wondering if the radiators for the auto and manual trannys have the same mounting points in the 4runners? Look to avoid the pink milkshake and installing a seperate trans cooler.

Use the search button buddy. And no, they don't. Every single 4Runner uses a different radiator. You need to take your truck down to the dealership and give them your VIN number so they can order you one, could take up to 8 months to get it in.
 
Unfortunately they only make the radiator for an auto. So if you run an external cooler you just have to loop the one in the new radiator. Look for a Koto Radiator, I think it's part #A1998. Should run you about $125.
 
Thanks man, yes, meant Koyo. T4RFinally, I have an external cooler but I will still be replacing my radiator. Radiators still go bad and it's just generally good maintenance to replace it, especially after 15 years.

Agreed. $125 for a new radiator is a safe bet and great preventative maintenance.

Just replaced mine along with an external transmission cooler. Except, a sawzall forced my radiator replacement. Guess it knew better.

Pitbull, my question was to the OP.

Tbst, my new rad fit perfectly and is holding up just fine.
 
Well I want to replace the radiator for the same reasons, they do fail and just for preventative maint as well. Plus when I got this 4runner I flushed the coolant 3 times because it was a nasty yellow brown color.

Then i'll turn the question around, rhetorically; if you are buying a new radiator, why bother with an external trans cooler?

I am little on the paranoid side, which is why i went ahead and replaced a working radiator, but i only saw a use for an extra cooler if i needed extra cooling by running it in-line with the built-in cooler. My driving habits and environment dont have that requirement so a new, quality radiator is all i did.

I would suggest both just because for a few extra $'s, you guarantee you'll never have the pink milkshake. My driving habits don't dictate the need for the additional cooling but for $40, I know I'll never have the problem. Plus, a new radiator can fail. Might even be bad when you receive it. Odds are it'll be fine but the external cooler is cheap insurance IMO.

I followed your thread on this T4R, absolutely nothing wrong with what you did and why you did it that way. Different strokes for different folks as they say.
 
Yeh, thats why i said it was a rhetorical question.

You cant build redundancy into every part replacement. When you buy what is supposed to be a quality part, you should be able to feel comfortable that it has been tested with some quality assurance methods. Any or all of the options are cheap insurance though.
 
I disagree. The only insurance (maybe assurance is a better term) is to separate them. Not busting your balls, I like you. You make good contributions to the forum. I just politely disagree with you here.
 
No problem PB. Its not personal. I respect your opinion and your right to disagree. My opinion is that it is overkill. My logic is based on the fact that my runner made it 12 years without an extra cooler and my insurance is replacing what it already had, given that i have no need to come close to pushing it to what it is capable of doing that might benefit from extra cooling.

In the end, it is what helps you sleep at night knowing you dont have to worry anymore about a known problem (pink 'shake). If that takes bypassing the onboard tranny cooler, then so be it.
