Radio Removal

Hi gang currently getting ready to pick up an 06 4Runner with what looks like the standard Toyota CD Deck. I have a Grom Audio Aux Ipod connection "kit" on my current ride (07 Tacoma TRD Sport). I checked Grom Audio's site and the same kit is compatible with my future ride.

I'm looking for a write up that will teach me how to remove the factory radio on 4runners. Does anyone have one? A youtube video would also be nice. I know there are a few for Tacomas.

Thanks!!!!!

Here is the Ipod connection I'm referring to. http://www.gromaudio.com/store/aux_..._lexus_scion_auxiliary_interface_adapter.html

It looks a little complex, but some really great members of this board have been REALLY helpful and have given me a lot of tips and reassurance that this is an easy mod. Just take your time!

Good luck!

I see that. Patience is the key. Thanks again! Looking forward to doing this on Sunday (if i get a good deal on the 06 i'm eyeballing! )

Do what Zero said, take your time and it's really an easy thing to do. I just installed a Scion T1808 in my runner and it only took me about 45 minutes to do. Just don't lose any screws when you take them out (I almost lost one) and don't feel like your going to break any of the tabs. Some of them come off real easy and others are a little stubborn but with a gentle yet firm pull they pop right off.

Let me know if you run into any snags as I just did this about 2 weeks ago.

And now it's....Peanut butter jelly time! peanut butter jelly time! (any Family guy lovers out there?)

Well, i just finished my T1808 mod! Here's what it looks like:

The new HU:

My wife requested the cable be put in the ashtray area. Due to the female-end being pretty large, i drilled a 1/2" hole in the rear of the ashtray and clipped a rectangle-shaped hole just big enough for the white plastic female end to be fished thru and ran up to the new HU.

With the cable all wound up, it fits into the ashtray without a prob.

Also, the charger-end that i bought with the cable sits in there as well (you can see it just inside on the left).

The T1808 only does one annoying thing....it says SCION when i start it up! Is there a way to change that?

Thanks for posting that link. Picking up my 4th gen next week and the head unit will be the first thing changed. :)

Hey, one last thing:

If you want the new radio display to read something else besides "Scion", i found the manual online that has (on page 28) the steps to change it.

Here's the link:

Scion Audio System - Toyota part no. PT546-00080 - Owner's manual for AM/FM/CD Player with iPod control

Basically, hold the MUTE button while key is turned to OFF, hold it in and turn the key to ACC, then press n hold the PRESET #1 button and turn key to OFF. This puts it in "customize" mode. Then you use the Preset #'s 3,4 and 5 to move the cursor and choose the letters you want! :guitar3:

Install looks great Zero! glad it all worked out well. Thanks for the tip on changing the "Scion" screen at start-up. I'll have to change that soon.

Thanks, Krup!

Im not too happy about my cutting job into the plastic ashtray, so im still going to hunt for a gasket/grommet/whatever-piece that could make it look cleaner.

As for the customization-option, one thing you need to know is that you have 60 seconds to do your customizing and the unit shuts off. If youre dont finish your desired customizing job, you'll just repeat the process and it'll start where you left off. I think it tok me 3-4 cycles until the unit read my wife's name and in total, "Her Ride".

Enjoy!
