I have the valeo ultimate wipers. the ones that dont have the metal "frames". So far they are great. They really shine when on the highway at speed over 60 mph. No lift off the windhshield, no streaks, no noise, just a super clean view. I hope they last for at least 8 months, the winters are very harsh here.

I put a set of rainx on my son's Saturn and was pretty disappointed with how long they lasted. They started streaking pretty bad in less than 6 months. Granted, his car sits out in the elements, and sun beats pretty hard at our 7000 foot altitude...
They did a good job of keeping ice from building up in the wiper internals in the really bad weather, though.

how much are these name brand things anyway?
imho, cheapy wipers are all you need. im not super frugal as to only replacing the inserts, but in my experience the cheapest wipers from any local auto part store will do just fine.
unless you're in an area that has CONSTANT rain, you only use the wipers for a limited amt of time. the rest of the year the sun beats down and eats away at the blade.

Are you asking about the new RainX Latitude wipers or the traditional type style? I posted a thread about a promotion they are having recently have been waiting to try to the Latitude wipers since they seem pretty interesting.

I have had these wipers on my 04 Runner and my wife's 07 Camry for about a month now and they seem to do a great job. I have had the opportunity to use them in rain, freezing rain, and snow and they cover the windshield the entire length of the wiper on both vehicles. They wipe without leaving nay streaks or haze. (I did treat the windows with RainX before installing however)
Since our cars are garaged at night and winter has been easy to date, I cannot comment on how well they handle snow/ice build up as opposed to the winter blades I normally run.
These are expensive IMO but I did buy them via the promotion which includes other RainX products:

I haven't tried the Rain-X wipers but I wouldn't bother. I had the PIAA Super Silicone wipers on my Taco for over 3 years straight and were still going strong when I traded for the 4R. Water sheeting off like it had Rain-X applied but without needing to apply anything. PIAA Silicone are fairly expensive (compared to Anco replacements) but performance and ease of sue are well worth it in the long run.

I just put Piaa blades on my 4runner and my Jeep, two months ago. I love them. So far these are the only replacement ones that have not squeaked on me. Usually, on the runner, if it is only drizzling out then the wipers make a noise. The Piaa ones are really quite and smooth.

The PIAA are over price, if you want silicon blades, try silblades.

1) How much improvement is the new wiper and how much is the RainX.

Possibly, early in the vehicle's life. If the treatment on the windshield is in fact a coating (as Toyota states), then it will and does wear off.
I work in the coatyings field and know that PPG makes most of the glass for the automotive market. I am not aware of any "permanent" coating that they apply as part of their manufacturing process.
I do know that they do make a very good "post" applied coating called Aquapel that they deem as lasting for 4 - 6 months:
