Raising the Alternator's voltage to properly feed your AGM Battery!

Nice work, it’s not for me I just do the occasional maintenance charge but appreciate the write up. What spare fuse kit is that in the video? I’d like to find one that covers my added circuits and original fuses. Links are appreciated by all.

No kit in the video, he just replaced the 7.5A (S... for sensor) fuse with a Diode. There are a bunch of them on ebay, where I got mine, but I bought the one that I think he was using... only $5 bucks (plus tx), and Fast&Free S&H, I had it in like four days!

Just remember: "It will NOT increase the amperage capacity of the alternator; only the voltage!" So a 130A alternator will still only produce it's factory nomenclature specs! 'Best

FYI, I've been running the archlightled booster since April of 2019.
I've also been running all 3 of his interior LED light products just as long and can't recommend them enough. All 4 items are excellent quality products that I wouldn't want to live without.

I have an XP270 alternator feeding a group 31M AND group 65M Northstar AGM's.

In the last 19 months, the T4R has been used multiple ways, hunting, fishing, camping, on the trails, daily driver, pulling a trailer and it sometimes sits 2 weeks at at time with no usage at all. it starts right up EVERYTIME. No electrical issues of any kind that I can recall.

Keep in mind that you no longer have fuse protection in that alternator circuit. That diode is not a fuse.

That diode may fail open at some point, but I have no idea of how many amps.

Diodes have an amperage rating too... ask me how I know... Lol! This Diode has an amp rating of 7.5 amps; to protect the Alternator (S) Sensor circuit in the GMC/Chevy alternator (S) circuit too, so (hypothetically), those vehicles are protected as well!

On high I get 15-15.1v at start and it drops down to 14.5-14.7v which should be perfect for the the x2p

I have had my Odyssey battery for 4 years with zero mods and zero issues. In my opinion no mods are needed.

This is my opinion too. I still have the OEM battery in my 4Runner but will replace it with an AGM when it is time for a new battery.

I had an AGM battery in my previous FJ Cruiser for several years with no (voltage booster) mods and had no issues. My reason for switching to an AGM was due to the regular battery it replaced had leaked and the acid actually ate away some of the metal below the battery.

I bought an Optima Red Top today to replace my OEM Panasonic. 2018 and a bit confused about several of the threads I have read concerning the alternator output.

If I understand correctly what I'm reading, a battery tender is needed to fully charge the AGM since the 5th Gen Alternator will only charge up to a certain voltage? Or the use of a mod that puts a diode into the fuse box sorta tricking the voltage sensor needed?

Am I misunderstanding?

As I posted in another tread several years ago I called Odyssey and asked about warranty issues I have read about on this forum. If the battery fails in its warranty period they will replace it. They said the voltage is not an issue and they have not had any problems with 4runners in general as long as the alternator etc. is working properly. I pretended not to know about the voltage boosters mentioned on the forum. I asked them how to boost the voltage and they did not know. Then they said not to overthink the voltage issue and just use it as normal which I have done.

Has anyone used the OP’s suggested GMC diode in a 2020/2021? When I first got my runner and put the AGM batteries in, I reached out to one of the voltage booster manufacturers and they told me it wouldn’t work because 2020+ have smart alternators. Based on my testing, that did not appear to be true - it appears to just have a lower voltage output.
I gave up on it at the time, but after a year of deep cycling one, and occasionally both batteries, I’m starting to think I need to keep a more suitable voltage on the primary battery and do a better job of maintaining my secondary battery.

Or just buy your AGM battery at Costco.
60 months replacement, 100 prorated guarantee..
