rancho 9000XL Adjustable knob?

I have a 86 4runner 4wd and I was wondering if anyone else had these shocks.

I want a smooth ride but not so bouncy when i hit a bump. (around town; whats a good number?)

Then whats a good number adjustment for off roading on hard terrain.

Is 9 = stiff and 1 = soft?

Yes, 1=soft 9=stiff.
